They may have been provided with a good deal by the council. Rotorua drew a relatively good crowd for the Tonga game last year.

The new NZRL is really taking some positive steps. If this was five years ago, the match would've been played at Mt Smart Stadium in front of 5000.

It also helps that they can promote their national side as being the current World Champions. Taking them around the country instead of having them play in either Mt Smart Stadium or just up the road at North Harbour Stadium is a good thing. Unlike union, league tests in NZ really only happen in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. Good to see they are giving other regions a chance to see their national team.

Better than my photo taken in near darkness.

Still don't know why it remains oval. The cricket ground up the road hosts first class matches and it's not even the first choice for an international if Bay of Plenty was ever to get one. Blake Park in Tauranga would get the nod.

Beautiful looking stadium. Have they ever run speedway there? And athletics sounds a reasonable guess.

On further inspection, I don't rate the stand. Haven't sat in it but the roof is a bit Olympic Park (never a good thing) and the gradient of the seats looks a bit flat, which is a no-no when you are a bit removed from the action.

Still, it's good to see a regional city get a big gig. Ugly or not, you need facilities of that size to draw those events. Go Kumuls!
