Here are various venues on the North Island I visited in November 2007

Queen Elizabeth Park, Masterton

Occasional venue of Central Districts Stags cricket

Image

Memorial Park, Masterton

Home of AA rewards Heartland Championship side Wairarapa-Bush. This is the closest major town to the Tui Brewery.

Image

Image

I love this terracing!

Image

Image

Image

The alternative to having palm trees behind the posts

Image

Image

McLean Park, Napier

Multi-purpose venue used for test and one day cricket as well as provincial rugby

Image

Image

Image

Image

The two home sides

Image

Bluewater Stadium

Home ground of Hawkes Bay United of the NZFC it is located in the Park Island complex

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Owen Delany Park, Taupo

One of the home grounds of Heartland Championship union King Country Rams

Image

Image

Image

Quite an expansive ground oval, it features a grass running track and has a turf wicket

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Rotorua International Stadium, Rotorua

The second venue of Bay of Plenty of the Air New Zealand Cup

Image

Image

The ground is set in a natural ampitheatre and features expansive grass hills

Image

Image

The shape suggests it may have had a speedway track at one stage. It is mult-purpose and features a softball diamond at the far end. Athletics is also held here

Image

The expansive main stand

Image

This shows just how massive the banks are

Image

Image

Baypark Stadium, Mt Maunganui

A combined speedway/rugby stadium, it was originally Bluechip Stadium

Image

The main entry gates

Image

Underneath the stand. Yes they are wooden boards!

Image

There was a lot of red dirt/dust floating around suggesting there may have been a recent speedway event when I visited

Image

Image

Looking towards the corporate/media facilities.

Image

This is the kind of view Sydney FC fans will have to expect come December 12 at Palmerston North as FMG Stadium also has a dirt speedway with a high safety perimeter fence

Image

Main venue of the Steamers

Image

Paeroa Domain, Paeroa

Better known as the hometown of iconic NZ soft drink L&P, it is also one of the home venues of Thames Valley of the Heartland Championship. One thing I found interesting was the further north I went the more Speight's, a beer from the South Island sponsored teams

Image

Entrance to the Domain

Image

The venue is quite agricultural and very rural NZ. You'd almost expect Dog from Footrot Flats to wonder across the field and Fred Dagg to be there with a thermos and lamb sanga to be watching a match

Image

Image

Image

Things are quite basic here

Image

Image

Running track etched into the field and tyres surrounding the lights

Image

Image

Te Aroha Domain, Te Aroha

This is another ground of the Swamp Foxes

Image

Seddon Park, Hamilton

I'm pretty sure Jeffles has posted some pics before but here is a few more. When I dropped by they were in the process of installing the temporary seats they have on part of the outer

Image

Players entry from the Pavillion

Image

Image

Image

Image

Home ground of the Knights for most games

Image

Image

Waikato Stadium, Hamilton

The Super 14 Chiefs, Air New Zealand Cup Waikato and until this season, NZFC Waikato FC called this ground their home

Image

Image

Image

Image

Although slightly cut-off there is an entrance gate in a Māori design

Image

WEL Networks stand

Image

Looking down the pitch in football configuration. The end where this photo was taken from sometimes has a temporary stand to boost capacity

Image

Brian Perry Stand

Image

The Growers Stadium, Pukekohe

The daylight venue of Counties Manukau in the Air New Zealand Cup. Night matches are at Mt Smart. The field is built into the side of a hill

Image

The main stand uses the hill to full effect

Image

The field isn't enclosed properly and has wide open grass expanses

Image

Image

The north or bottom entrance opens up pretty much onto the playing arena for fans to walk to either side of the ground

Image

The entry to the stand is from the top of the hill on the side road

Image

Image

Cobham Oval, Whangarei

Sometimes venue of Northern Districts cricket

Image

It is one of the two venues in Okara Park. The rugby stadium is in the background

Image

Newish pavillion replicating old English style

Image

ITM Stadium, Whangarei

The main stand

Image

A massive grass bank and seating form the outer

Image

A velodrome surrounds the playing field

Image

The natural contours of the land provide a spectacular viewpoint for spectators

Image

An entry gate

Image

The naming rights sponsor of the time

Image

In 1979 for a Ranfurly Shield defence 40,000 crammed into a 25,000 capacity ground in a town with a population of 34,000

Thanks for the pic s you lucky bastard. We could really beef up the NZ section of this website with them.

Rotorua and Tauranga were locked when I went. I also couldn't believe the wooden boards at the latter. Fortunately I have a pic of Tauranga City United AFC's ground. It reminds me of Perry Park in Brisbane.

Taupo and Whangarei are great cricket venues. Amazed they aren't used more for internationals.

The HAL match in Palmerston North has now made me consider doing a road trip up the west coast of the North Island.

How lucky are you? You're so fond of Palmie and now they play a game there.

You're making me jealous.

How big is that Hill? Reminds me of those pictures of a chock-a-block Odsal stadium for the RL world record crowd.

When I first saw the ground it reminded me of what the huge east terrace at The Valley would have looked like.

My favourite venue was the rugby ground in Masterton.

Next when I get the chance I'll have pictures of grounds in Auckland - bar Eden Puke, North Harbour, Western Springs and Trusts which I all visited on a previous visit.

Of course you'd love Masterton - it had terracing and Tui.

Very true.

Speaking of Tui, the brewery at Mangatainoka is just over the mountain from Palmerston North.

If I could find a willing helper in December I'd break my alcohol ban and get slaughtered on State Highway 2 on the beer round here.

I saw a Speight's beer ad a few weeks ago where the bloke scorns the idea of sleeping on a dirty matress until he has to go out and round up sheep. sh*t beer - great ad.

Can't find a link for it unfortunately.
