Thanks for those photos, including the scoreboard one.

When I was NZ I searched secondhand bookstores for THe Basin by Don Neely. It's the ground's history book. Couldn't find it so I am ordering it from University of Canterbury Press. I want to see photos of it when it was in square shape.

The raised seating in the Caketin allows them to put in temporary seating for RU matches. The Sydney Showground at Homebush Bay put termporary seating in front of the stands when the Bulldogs played there. They were green whereas the other seats were red. I'm surprised it wasn't raised more in Wellington given the difference in ticket demand between RU and cricket.

I am sure most people on here like to have a judge of the crowd size when watching on TV, however the tricky part is how many people are on the camera side. It would appear from those photos HD has taken that f**k all sit on the camera side so you get to see the whole crowd on TV at Westpac for A-League games. I guess living in Queensland you expect as many as possible to be in the shade, a different situation for the Wellington folk (unless its closed off?)

Great set of photos HD. About the Basin Reserve lights, they don't look particularly high, which might of been a problem, and there doesn't appear to be any over the Vance stand side.

Nah they only close a few bays off now. The Yellow fever are on that side, most people want to congregate and start atmosphere.

Shucks, Wellington deprivation is hitting reviewing those photos.

IMO they made a big mistake in Wellington with the Caketin. The Basin Reserve is a perfect ground for cricket, with plenty of charm and enough capacity for test matches and limited overs games. The city needed a modern rectangular stadium for the Hurricanes, A-League and the occasional All Bleks fixture. Something similar to Melbourne's AAMI Park would have been much better for 95% of events.
