Capacity of Maracana

Post by Dundee »

Can anyone say me the actual capacity of Maracana Stadium in Rio? On some websites there stands 103.000 but on some sites there stands 122.000. What is right? Thanks for help.

My understanding is that for safety reasons the capacity is down to 70 or 80k. Whenever I see highlights of Brasilian futebol the bottom tier is always empty. Even when it's a Flu-Flam (Fluminense & Flamengo) derby.

Yeah the same was in Montevideo, it originally could hold 130,000 but they had closed many areas off and could only hold 70,000 people.

Maracana is in that vicinity, Last I heard it had about an 80,000 seat capacity but it could have gone down since then...because of it closing areas because of the lack of maintenance they are doing on the stadiums.

They havent changed much since the 1930s when Uruguay beat Brazil At Maracana in front of 199,000 people in the World Cup Final...thus the capacity is dropping because of the lack of maintenance.

It is a crying shame however though

Most sources say the Maracanna seats around 77 000. But for those that keep stating 195 000 or something, can we do the same and give Telstra stadium 110 000 and the MCG 138 000. if they don't tell the truth, why should we.

The Maracana was built for the 1950 Football World Cup held in Brazil.
The final played there between Uraguay and Brazil recorded an official crowd of 199,854. This is still the largest football crowd to attend a match in any stadium in the world. Many people of the time indicated that many thousand also got into the stadium without paying.
The official size was 205,000 in 1950.
This has been reduced over the years dramatically due to lack of maintainence.
In 1980's and 1990's the capacity was 150,000. In 1992 about 50 fans were hurt before a Rio State championship match. The crowd was 150,000.
In 1998 stadium received some renovations and the capacity was further reduced to around 77,000 which is currently the capacity.
With Brazil aiming to try to host a second World Cup in the future there is speculation that the Maracana will be redeveloped into a modern stadium with a capacity of around the 100,000 mark.

Judging by the pitch there, roughly the same size as SCG (playing surface wise). Heh, AFL- LEt's expand!

why would they make it an oval when it is for soccer? it would be too small for athletcs or they would have to carve into the lower bowl like the MCG for the commonwealth games

That model looks like the original plans for Waverly Park - with the stands at about the same gradient.

Because thats the way they built it in 1950! The plan is only to renovate it, not rebuild it.

BTW - How many of that 199,000 crowd was seated?? If the MCG was now only 2/3 seating like it did in 1970 when it got 121,696 at the GF, and with no room taken up by multiple decks of corporate boxes, dining areas with views etc, it would have #160,000 capacity now, with the far larger stands.

The 199,000 crowd was mostly standing, I would say only around 1/4 where actually sitting down.

So, if its made all seating, it'll naturally hold far less - even more so if corporate boxes, dining areas, media areas etc are added.

After todays media reports, perhaps the Cocacobana Blues might be the go! 8)
