"Bunnings Stadium" and 14 million dollars for the

Post by Egan »

THE WA Football Commission is seeking a 10-year, $14 million naming rights deal for Subiaco Oval that would help underpin the financial security of the game in WA.

The commission announced a five-point plan at its annual general meeting this week aimed at achieving financial stability.

Although the commission has yet to negotiate a deal over naming rights, it is believed hardware giant Bunnings has shown preliminary interest.

For almost two years the WAFC has maintained the position that a price for the naming rights had to reflect Subiaco Oval's strong football and sporting heritage that has endured for almost 90 years. It has baulked at a figure of less than $1.2 million a season.

WAFC chief executive Wayne Bradshaw confirmed the commission's goal would be to arrange a long-term naming right sponsor.

Taking into account inflation, the commission would be seeking a deal worth close to $14 million.

Last season the SANFL sold the naming rights for Adelaide's Football Park to insurance company AAMI in a deal believed to be worth almost $6 million over five years.

The WAFC posted a loss of more than $730,000 in 2002 but the commission is confident the five-point plan - which includes working with the State Government and banks to restructure its $34 million debt, seeking more funding from the AFL, fixed royalties from WA's two AFL clubs, an improved financial performance from Fremantle and the Subiaco Oval naming rights deal - would improve financial security.
