Does MMA deserve a spot on the list with 56,000 at Etihad?
Or does it sit with the wrestling and entertainment crowds which are not listed?

Sport. Added. Cheers!

Although it's a world record UFC crowd, I think they're slightly disappointed with that. Etihad Stadium reportedly had a capacity of around 70,000 for the event, so about 14k short of capacity. Was the second-largest sports* attendance at Docklands. Wallabies v Lions still holds the record.

Cam,its not a world record.
Its a record attendance for the UFC organisation, but not a record for MMA.

MMA World Record is the Pride Shockwave event in Tokyo,Japan 2002

Hitting people while they're unconscious is not a real sport.

Maybe not, but the work you see these guys putting in in the gym, and the way their whole life is structured around their next fight.... that's more sport than just about all the others.

I'm not a massive fan of it. But it is a sport, as is boxing. It's real.
Something like WWE is entertainment.

Professional wrestling, while having highly trained athletes, has never been a true sport in the contest sense of the word. The outcome is always fixed, legally of course, but fixed all the same. And the WWE these days doesn't even refer to it as wrestling. Their 'superstars' are called entertainers and the commentators are not even allowed to refer to them as wrestlers. Even commentators like Jerry Lawler, JBL and Booker T who were all very successful 'wrestlers' in their own right can't refer to them as wrestlers on air.

I believe that the UFC, while happy to have got their record crowd in Melbourne, were disappointed that they were still about 14k shy of capacity. Still, 56,000 to see people beat the living crap out of each other in a cage is nothing to scoff at.

I'd still love to see a Wrestlemania under the roof at Etihad, I reckon they would get 70,000. The Global Warming event there in 2002 attracted 56,734 which is 520 more than the UFC attracted. But a Wrestlemania would get a full house. Can't see it happening though.
