Yes. Cam has the crowd figure only.

I've just purchased Footy Works which has all the AFL/VFL crowd data back to 1960

Just an aside to the Tennis record. That crowd is a World Record for Davis Cup only. I think the real Tennis world record is 30, 000 + for the Battle of the Sexes exhibition between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King at the Houston Astrodome

jeffles...

you are quite right about the Riggs vs Billie Jean King match in 1973.It attracted 30,472.

I guess being a made for TV exhibition match between a male and female makes its disputable,so many still proclaim the Sydney crowd as the rightful record holder.

The Sydney attendance is not just Davis Cup record ,but all tennis matched(except for the Riggs vs Jean King game)

I guess when I think about it,the true record probably goes to Houston.

Ill try and find an aerial of the Sydney Davis Cup crowd.I know it exists, ive seen it and its quite amazing. The MANY and HUGE temporary stands just keep rising and the people are packed in like sardines...Finding it is the problem......

Isn't it hilarious that the world record attendance for a baseball game is in Australia. I believe that the game was between an Australian team of amateurs and an American team of servicemen (10-5 to the Americans & the Guiness Book of Records gives the attendance as 114000, not 104000)- Baseball was a surprise selection as a demonstration sport at the Melbourne Olympics alongside Aussie Rules. The organisers were required at the time to choose a local sport and a foreign one to act as demonstration events in the hope of them one day being included as official sports. It took Baseball until 1992 to become a medal sport, and we're still waiting on a decision regarding the inclusion of Aussie Rules.
P.S. Barcelona 1992 (surfing, taekwondo) was the last Olympics at which demonstration sports appeared.

I've seen the photo you are talking about Dan. The old NSW Tennis Museum had it at its old home in White City. Unfortunately, I haven't seen it since the move to Homebush Bay. But I can tell you all it looked huge!!!

I think the record for an SANFL match is around the 76,000 mark. Back in the good old days when we didn't have those silly fire codes. I remember seeing footage on TV, spectators were sitting around the boundary line :D

Those fire codes are silly aren't they Yob.
Just to answer your question Marcus. The surfing at Barcelona was plagued with problems: no waves  , heavy pollution, the competition area set out in the middle of a busy shipping lane......The IOC said 'never again'

attendance points of interest

Post by Tonic »

I've got a feeling there was about 28 000 at at Davis Cup match at Kooyong during Australian tennis' golden era. From memory, John Alexander on the "HIstory of Australian Tennis" video mentions this (but I emphasise "from memory").

Also, that official crowd figure of 66 897 or whatever for the 1976 SANFL Grand Final (go you mighty Double Blues!) was the "official" crowd figure, but after a while they were just letting people into the ground any which way they could (including for free), so in reality there was apparently in the order of 75 000+ at Footy Park that day.

Another thing about crowd figures that might be of interest is the world record cricket attendance of ~ 91 000 at the MCG in 1961. Once again this an "official" record, since Eden Gardens in Kolkata/Calcutta, India rarely bothers counting crowd numbers but has probably had attendences of over 100 000 on a number of occassions.

I'm pretty sure one of the Eden Gardens corwds has been OFFICIALLY recognised as a World Record. Not certain since I haven't got the Guiness Book with me but I am pretty sure.

Also, I can't find the Kooyong reference you speak of. Everywhere I've checked mentions White City as having the record.
