It appears that the work on the $29m upgrade is "continuing" with selected tenderers working on prices for work in the Eastern Stand. The tender for the Western Stand closed just over a month ago.

2+2=5 says that the 35k is the medium/long term plan and the current work is an interim solution.
Anybody else see either a horribly compromised 35k stadium and/or a large amount of money being wasted by the end of this process?
Yes, I think that's a likely outcome.

One ray of hope though - Lederer continues to talk the talk.

TS: You were very bullish this week about the prospects of getting the government to rebuild Parramatta Stadium, not just upgrade it. Will it happen?

Paul Lederer: My view on this is simple – there are three million people in Western Sydney and they deserve a stadium. The Parramatta Eels have exactly the same issue.

To spend $30m on an extension when you can have a brand new stadium for $120m, with world class facilities and corporate boxes and so on – to me as a businessman, it’s not even a decision.

There is a DA approved for a stadium, so it could be done in, say, 18 months? If the government wants to make it happen, they can do so very quickly. It will be a disaster if it doesn’t happen – for sport, for the multi-use possibilities. I’m talking about a world-class facility.

We’re averaging 17-18k per game. I’m totally convinced that if it wasn’t for the stadium we’d be averaging 30,000 per game. Where we play is ideal, but the facilities are average. It’s a 50-year-old stadium, it’s archaic.

When we have VIPs from overseas, it’s embarrassing. We had the ambassador from Saudi Arabia queuing up for half an hour to use the one lift. Compare that with Etihad Stadium in Melbourne where you’re wining and dining in style. Here you get a chicken burger if you’re lucky.

....

TS: You seem to looking at the long term and…

PL: Sorry to contradict you but I’m talking about the next two to three years, not never-never land. I want the training session up and running in two years, a licensed club up and running in two years. A new stadium in two years. Once we’ve got that we want an academy and getting into junior football – it’s a massive project.

"Paul Lederer: My view on this is simple – there are three million people in Western Sydney and they deserve a stadium."

OK, then build one for them.

"We’re averaging 17-18k per game. I’m totally convinced that if it wasn’t for the stadium we’d be averaging 30,000 per game."

Sure - how about you test that theory by moving to ANZ Stadium before making demands about building new stadiums?

"you can have a brand new stadium for $120m, with world class facilities and corporate boxes and so on"

Really? Robina Stadium (which, while perfectly fine for its purpose) is hardly "world class" and cost $160m almost 7 years ago. The MRS is world class, but cost $268m over four years ago. It seems Mr Lederer has discovered the secret of building world class stadiums for next to nothing...

No secret, Lederer's just shown enough form to be considered full of sh*t by default.

That said, he has more standing to be requesting new stadiums in Sydney than aussie rules and cricket.

Looks like Western Sydney might be getting half of the conditional promise of $1.2b for stadiums and cultural assets.
Mr Baird said the health and transport infrastructure in Western Sydney will provide a critical framework for the region but added that Rebuilding NSW also recognises the importance of sporting and cultural assets with:

$600 million for a Western Sydney Sports stadium; and
The creation of a Parramatta Cultural Precinct where CBD-based art and cultural collections can be shared in Parramatta and Western Sydney.

$600 million is a lot for one stadium considering the capacity cap. Unless that 600 is for the paper shredder at Homebush.

The govt press release isn't consistent (gosh, what a surprise...). In one part it talks about 'stadium' and in another it mentions 'stadiums'.

So which is it Mr Baird - is the $600m for a single stadium, or multiple?

It's a bit odd. I think they're being consistent with referring to the portfolio in the plural, as they do with the rest in the list. Then when it comes time to talk turkey the reveal is the portfolio of stadiums consists of... one stadium.

Really, it's the NSW government so who knows.

In the general media release it talked about $600m for stadiums and $600m for cultural assets for the whole city. This media release specifically about Western Sydney, although confusing, at least seems to indicate that $600m of the $1.2b will be spent in Western Sydney. To me it puts the kibosh on the NRL's proposition that would have seen all of the stadium money spent on knocking down and replacing SFS with a bigger stadium.

The latest is that Pirtek will get $100m extra to take it to 32k capacity. I think this is an ideal size for a club.

I defy anyone to do a count and prove there was 7000 empty seats last night at Pirtek.

Why would Wanderers/Parra under report attendances when they're lobbying for a capacity upgrade?

The RBB was nowhere near full, the other end was pretty scarce. Also factor in the 4k worth of empty seats us Aussies can't see because we're conditioned to watching our version of full stadiums, not premier league/champions league full.

There are quite a few demolition pictures on the Pirtek Facebook page. There is quite a bit of space under the Western Grandstand that they will fill with the $4.5m Stage 1 of the upgrade.

Work on Stage 1 of the upgrade is on schedule for completion in May 2015. Stage 2, the addition of 2.4k seats at both the north and south ends is scheduled for completion in October 2015.
