Adam White, a Melburnian presenter on Radio Sports National tweeted this which was retweeted by ABC Grandstand.

Is it a case of "honest mistake" or "Melbourne bubble" that the bloke refers to a "new venue" with a photo of a 14 year old grandstand and not a pic of the receveloped end? I'm saying it's the latter.

It is a new venue. Never hosted an AFL match before.

99% of Sydneysiders would probably make the same mistake you're talking about in any case.

And to be fair, it has been heavily redeveloped. No problem at all calling it a new venue for the AFL. And that's the end with the bigger stands - the other end isn't quite so impressive. Apart from the "largest video screen in the southern hemisphere"... :)

Canterbury were playing there a decade ago...

Yes, but it is new to the AFL Seniors. It has hosted Sydney AFL club matches though. There's obvious ambiguity about the word new. Something that has just been created is new. Similarly, something is new to somebody if they have not previously encountered it (e.g. a new friend, who happens to be 80 years of age).

In any event, in that tweet says "new Skoda Stadium" and "new venue". It'd be a very narrow read of that to say he is not referring to the new facilities at least in part, which is why the accompanying photo of the old stands is amusing to me.

I doubt it would crack the top 50 in college football alone. The old "in the Southern Hemisphere" line is one you trot out when you're not willing to be compared to any other developed country.

So what? I doubt many more than diehard Canterbury supporters could pick which stadium the stands are from if you showed them a picture.

The stadium was unique. I went to a number of Saints matches there. It held a great novelty value for opposition fans at the time. Rugby League in a baseball ground, temporary seating, terraced hills. I met David Moffatt on one those same hills. This at the height of Canterbury's "hooligan" troubles.

So I think you're wrong. More then just die-hard Bulldogs fans would recognise the ground, and it is not a new venue.

Unique? The viewing was sh*t for RL. The "baseball diamond" shape of the seats facing a rectangular field was a recipe for garbage. You would sit on behind the goals in a seat facing the benches. Or your seat on half way was orineted to face the 20m line. And the field markings were marked out slightly off the centre of the playing surface. You don't get that with AFL because the playing surface is virtually the whole field.

As for recognition of the new stands etc, I'd suggest a Sydneysider's recognition of the Showground would be pretty good. Among other events, it hosts the Royal Easter Show every year which draws 700k to 1m visitors.

Don't know if this was mentioned before, but GWS has dumped blacktown as its admin/training venue in favour of homebush.

The AFL's investment at Blacktown is now... an AFL academy.
