3rd Stadium in Melbourne

Post by jimtilders »

The AFL is considering a new (3rd) stadium in Melbourne. Preferably for clubs who find that marvel is unprofitable. A new stadium in Melbourne would most likely be a redevelopment of princess park or punt road otherwise it would be a brand new open air stadium with less than 35,000 seats. I hope they build a fully round (like MCG but much much smaller) with cover and closed backside. Hopefully close to the CBD.

Whitten Oval is another option - announced in May 2019: https://www.austadiums.com/news/665/bul ... itten-oval
Princes Park is having work done to it now, but as part of this, its capacity is being reduced so unfortunately I don't see it as an option moving forward, and there's just no space at Punt Road - a new grandstand will be built there in the next couple of years but will never be big enough for AFL games.

While there has been plenty of talk in the past, I haven't heard much about a proposed boutique third AFL venue for some time now.

Correct I thought the same, and yes I haven't either but there was before COVID when we could actually afford a new stadium. Still nice to think about though. I would love one a bit more east of Melbourne so I can get there easier 😉😉

They're throwing money down the drain 8) However, even that is sometimes necessary.
