Moonee Valley Racing Club is the historic home of what many say is Australia’s most prestigious horse race, the Tatts Cox Plate. It's considered one of Melbourne’s most appealing spectator racecourse, offering an exciting, up-close and personal entertainment experience like no other. Established in 1883, Moonee Valley has enjoyed a rich and vibrant history of thoroughbred horse racing at its unique amphitheatre track and was the first Australian metropolitan track to conduct night racing.

Moonee Valley Racing Club is committed to maintaining high standards of excellence in racing and customer service. Each race meeting offers premium racing, entertainment and enjoyment throughout the year and during the Spring Racing Carnival. Our aim is to engage and excite our members and visitors about day and night racing at Moonee Valley. The record attendance at the Valley is 50,670 for the 1960 Cox Plate while the largest attendance for a night meeting is 32,342 on opening night in 1998.

Cox Plate History
In honour of the founder of Moonee Valley, William Samuel Cox, the Moonee Valley Racing Club Committee decided to run a weight for age race over 2040m. Offering a purse of 1000 Pounds, the W.S. Cox Plate was first run in 1922 and was won by imported stallion Violencello. He was a seven-year-old who the previous year had won the Caulfield Cup at only his fifth start in Australia after being brought out from England.

Strategically placed on the racing calendar between the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, the Tatts Cox Plate has become a race of great importance and prestige. It is regarded as the best weight for age race in Australasia and one of the most exciting race days in the world. Today the Tatts Cox Plate carries total prize money of $3,050,000. It is the second richest race in Australia behind the Melbourne Cup.
