The City of Greater Geelong has appointed Melbourne firm Kane Constructions to undertake the new Eastern Stand redevelopment at Skilled Stadium.

"We are very pleased to have a firm of this calibre involved in the Skilled Stadium project," said City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr Barbara Abley.

"Kane Constructions has considerable experience in major projects including several in the Geelong region such as the Geelong Hospital redevelopment, the Gordon Tafe and the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute at Queenscliff," Cr Abley said.

Other projects include the redevelopment of Melbourne's Glass House, the new Australian Embassy at Beijing and the construction of the pit buildings and grandstands for the Australian Formula One Grand Prix at Albert Park.

"Kane Constructions will aim to source local labour and materials as much as possible during the Skilled Stadium redevelopment project," Cr Abley said.

The Minister for Commonwealth Games, Sport and Recreation, Justin Madden also congratulated Kane Constructions on its appointment.

He indicated the company has now won its second significant sport and recreation industry project in a relatively short period of time, with Kane currently undertaking the redevelopment of the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Centre (Glass House) due for completion in April this year.

"I'm pleased this milestone has been reached and that construction will kick off early in the New Year to keep the Skilled Stadium upgrade project on schedule to ensure that the maximum benefits can be achieved for the local community," Minister Madden said.

The redevelopment project has attracted well-credentialed firms including architects Peddle Thorp, project managers Davis Langdon and now the construction contractors Kane Constructions.

Cr Abley said, "This underscores the high profile of the project and gives us confidence the new stand at Skilled Stadium will be most impressive and meet the highest standards."

"When the redevelopment is complete it will greatly enhance the amenity of what is one of Geelong's most important community recreational assets," Cr Abley said.

The contractor will take possession of the site in late January. The first tasks at the site will be laying foundations and building a retaining wall.

Cr Abley said the first tier of the new stand is expected to be ready for spectators to use at the opening Geelong home game of the 2004 season.
