Canberra Stadium on hold

Plans for a new rectangular stadium in Canberra are on hold for at least a decade as the ACT government prepares to foot the $300m bill for the asbestos clean-up.

The existing Canberra Stadium (currently known as GIO Stadium following a naming-rights deal earlier this year) won’t receive any significant work over the coming years with only rolling renovations to keep it up to standard as it remains the home of the Canberra Raiders and ACT Brumbies until at least 2025.

The two clubs have faced dwindling crowds especially during the cold Canberra winter and a new covered-stadium had been slated to be built by 2020. A new venue, with the help of temporary seating, would have a capacity of around 30,000.

GIO Stadium has spent $5 million on upgrades over the past five years to keep it up to standard, including the latest $2 million facelift to build new ticket booths, worth $1.4million, and re-lay the playing surface.

The Raiders’ crowds this year dropped to under 10,000 while the Brumbies averaged just 12,000.
