New logo revealed for MCG

The revamped MCG will be showcased by a new logo.

The world-class stadium -- rapidly approaching the completion of a $435 million redevelopment - will face the sporting world with just the second logo in its history.

It could be seen from kilometres away, with MCC officials considering setting up a giant image on the back of the stadium's city-end scoreboard.

But the radical colour and design of the new version might not sit easily with traditionalists.

R-Co graphic designer Richard Henderson, who also created logos for BHP Billiton and Crown, and was entrusted with the 2006 Commonwealth Games, expects his MCG piece to have its knockers.

"One of the aspects of working in this field is that everyone has an opinion and we create these icons knowing everyone will have a view," Mr Henderson said.

"There are always critics but we're incredibly proud to have the opportunity to represent an icon that holds many memories for many people."

MCC commercial operations manager John Clark said the logo, which took three months to design, was seen by management group staff, the committee and MCG Trust before being approved.

He said it was unrealistic to think everyone would fall in love with the new design.

"I don't think you'd expect everyone to like it," he said.

The logo is set to be launched on Monday.

Football legends Ron Barassi and Bob Skilton, who both called the MCG home during their careers, laid eyes on the new logo for the first time yesterday.

The star duo were cautious at first before warming to the design.

"I wasn't sure about it at the start but it's growing on me now," Barassi said. "I like it."

The logo's unveiling comes less than two months before the new-look MCG is completed.

The new Ponsford Stand, Olympic Stand and Members' Reserve boasts: 12 kitchens, 29 bars, 30 cafes, 820 toilets and 14 escalators.
