Not surprisingly it has come out the the Adelaide Oval upgrade isn't sufficient for the venue to host the Commonwealth Games. I am always amazed when people don't understand the each sport and event has its own particular requirements of a venue.

Because Perth won't have built their stadium by 2030?

Any stadium needs an overlay to host these kinds of larger events...a similar amount of money was spent on upgrades for the MCG for the comm games.....beat up.....

Difference being the MCG actually hosted the Commonwealth games.

As I understand it, that hill means the stadium isn't even FIFA compliant. Or at least they won't be able to let anyone stand on it.

If the MCG can remove 10 rows of permanent seating, I'm sure AO can install a few temporary stands.

As for FIFA compliance... not an immediate problem but one that is also easily fixed at a later date.

Question for AO capacity after reconstruction - it's mentioned to be around 50k, is that just seating or overall (standing on the hill) ???

Redevelopment web site says 50,000 seated capacity. I assume it is correct.

FIFA's requirements will be way different by the time we think of bidding again.

It was more with the possibility of hosting Socceroos matches in mind.

The old Adelaide Oval already had approval to hold internationals and you are correct in saying that for internationals all spectators must have a seat in a permanent seating bay or grandstand. "Temporary" structures are not permitted. There were some scaffolded stands collapse somewhere in Africa iirc which led to this prohibition.

LOL, are you serious? Some piece of crap temporary stand in Africa collapsed because it was probably built with balsawood so FIFA ban temporary stands worldwide? A bit of an overreaction don't you think?

There's temporary and temporary. The proposed stadiums in Dubai are going to be downsized post WC, so given the stadiums aren't permanent, they're temporary. But that's a very different thing to scaffolding.

There have been scaffolded grandstands all over the world that have failed over the years and there have been fatalities. FIFA regs have to account for the different standards of local regulation so they put a blanket ban in.

This video clip is interesting to watch.

I heard that at the London Olympics there was considerable consternation at I think the rowing venue when the crowd stood as one to celebrate a British victory only to fall deathly silent as the temporary stand swayed rather violently.
