To start things off we've got some smooth work from our friends at the WA legislature.

Under the second new law WA police will be given unprecedented powers to frisk people for drugs and weapons.

The new search law, to be introduced before Christmas, would mean police would no longer be required to prove grounds of suspicion in court.

Don't look at a cop in Perth

Don't put your kids in the same footy team as a bikie's kid in NSW.

Those laws are transplanted from the South Australian legislature. Once you're a 'declared organisation' you can throw your rights out the window.

Mike Rann has a long and dirty history when it comes to separation of the legislative and judicial arms of government.

"These days people don't think the devil is real but we have seen the bad effects of the spiritual being known as Satan and we believe there is a spiritual fight over the nation of Australia being fought in the heavens.''

Asked what evidence of Satan there was in parliament, Mr Nalliah said: "The number of politicians who have serious marriage problems.''

Legislation supporting homosexuality, abortion and a push for a bill of rights were other areas where Mr Nallian said the devil was having influence.

"Me trying to explain it to you is like trying to teach a cricketer how to play soccer,'' Mr Nalliah said.

I think this is the religious right tell ing us that freedom is that thing where Jesus saves us from the Romans, and anything after that is the devil's work

This is what I truly love about Australia: when someone comes out with stuff like that it just gets laughs. Hardly anyone feels the need to take it seriously by publicly supporting or condemning him. The crap isn't perpetuated by some long-winded 'debate' about Christianity, separation of chruch and state or gay rights or free speech or anything.

I absolutely despise the WA Liberal Government

I wonder if the Nasty Pastor knows it's been pissing down all week in Canberra. Even stoking the fires of hell at Parliament won't keep them warm up there.

ACT gets same-sex civil partnerships

THE ACT will be able to offer civil partnership ceremonies for gay couples from today.

Two previous attempts to introduce the ceremonies have been blocked by the Federal Government which has the power to disallow laws passed by the territory's legislative assembly.

A number of celebrants will apply later today to become civil partnership notaries, allowing them to conduct the ceremonies.

The Rudd Government is under pressure from Christian groups to overturn the laws.

Having a lesbian in your cabinet probably doesn't help Ruddo. Penny Wong could be one of the first in line (assuming she has a partner currently)

Assuming he wants to overturn it. The original bill was overturned for the reason that it infringed on the Commonwealth's right to legislate. This bill (apparently) doesn't so it should be fine. And the ACL can go f**k themselves.

Incidentally:

CBS News: Oops: Did Texas Ban Marriage?

Quote:
Texas lawmakers wanted to make sure gay people couldn't be married. Instead, it seems, they may have made sure no one can.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram has the story. Here's what happened: In 2005, Texas voters and the state Legislature approved a Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

But the amendment included the following clause, which was reportedly designed to ban civil unions and domestic partnerships: "This state or a political subdivision of this state may not create or recognize any legal status identical or similar to marriage."

One thing that is "identical…to marriage," of course, is marriage. And Texas Attorney General candidate Barbara Ann Radnofsky, a Democrat, is arguing that the current Attorney General, Republican Greg Abbott, made a "massive mistake" in allowing the language.

"You do not have to have a fancy law degree to read this and understand what it plainly says," she said, according to the Star-Telegram. She called on Abbott to acknowledge the error and consider apologizing.

Abbott says the clause isn't a problem. His spokesman declined to directly address Radnofsky's charges but said the statute is Constitutional. A representative of the group that helped draft the amendment, meanwhile, said a lawsuit based on the wording had little chance of being successful.

But Radnofsky suggested the language clearly bans all marriage.

"Whoever vetted the language in [the clause] must have been asleep at the wheel," she said.

Suck sh*t Texas.

^^ That law is perfect. You're still free to get married, just not for the state to create or recognise the marriage. What else could you want?

TBH, I agree with you, but the fact that that's 100% not what they were going for is hilarious.

Fielding likens same-sex marriage to incest
MISHA SCHUBERT
November 27, 2009

FAMILY First senator Steve Fielding has compared same-sex marriages to incest, as a Senate inquiry yesterday recommended against allowing gay marriage in Australia.

A day after the first legally recognised same-sex civil ceremony in Canberra, Senator Fielding spoke out against allowing gay couples to wed.

''A bloke cannot marry his brother; it is not right,'' he said. ''A woman cannot marry their sister; it is not right. A bloke cannot marry a bloke because it is not right, and a female cannot marry a female because it is not right. I don't support this.''

...

That kind of association borders on the Chewbacca Defence's 'Silly Monkey' ploy.
