I'm trying to compile all SANFL fixtures, results, stats and attendance figures dating back as far as possible, much like the AFL stats website: http://cromulent.freehosting.net/afl/afl_index.html

Does anyone know a way of accessing past newspapers without having to trudge into the state library and put those clunky films into those monster screen things? That would take me years - not to mention that back then we had 2 local papers.

At the moment i've managed crowd stats for the last 5 years, they are probably the hardest ones to come across, but any other help would be appreciated. God I wish I didn't chuck out old papers, fire hazard my arse.

http://smicik.customer.netspace.net.au/sanfl.xls - that's my working spreadsheet until I get the web stuff in order.

Oh and I guess I have to be a bit of a South Australian and tell ya all about that 18,000+ crowd to the Port Norwood game, and 13,000+ crowd for Norwood Sturt a couple of years back - feast your eyes on that VFL!

That's pretty impressive Yob... sorry I can't help but just wondering... once you do get yer hands on previous years...

did the eagles crowds increase after the merger? how are they these days?

In 93, when the Eagles were absolutely dominant, their crowd numbers would have been around 4000 avg I would guess...

I'd say after the Merger, the crowds were on par if not a little higher than West Torrens crowds, and a whole lot larger than previous Woodville crowds...

Either way, nice work, Yob :) Sorry, can't help you out with any old crowd figures... I've kept a few football budgets over the years, but unfortunately they don't have previous crowds listed in them :P

I'd say it's a guarantee that the crowds were lower post merger, because it was the same time that the Crows massacred the local competition.

The port natives' crowds were on average 5,616 in 1989, and their single match fixtures (non double headers) at Footy Park in 1990 averaged 5,889. No idea about the Woodville crowds.

When I have time i'll hunt down the early 90's and beyond crowds for all clubs, i'm keen to see if Westies have had sh*t crowds for the entire century, go bloods! :D

I could pretty much guarantee that ;)

Although, look on the bright side, at least you're not South Adelaide ;)

The file is so large because it looks to be generated with Microsoft's patented "lets make a web page 10 times bigger than what it should be" technology... ;) MS adds a whole heap of un-needed xml and style markup in the background...

To be easily editable, the data would have to reside on a database online, with an asp or php or jsp of cfm page grabbing it's data etc etc...

Geez, this round Centrals V Port managed to get 4,500 out to Elizabeth Oval, when it was on at the same time as the crows game AND was televised live against the gate on ABC (not to mention port aren't in the finals race) :O Even bigger crowd at Unley as well which was a surprise.

Well, that's the end of the home and away season. Overall, crowds were slightly down on last year, but this was because both the league powerhouses Norwood and Port didn't finish in the top 5 - in fact Norwood were wooden spooners, and Port has missed the finals for the 3rd year in a row.

Total: 253,545 (90 games)
Average crowd: 2,818

Top 10 attendances:

Central V West: 6,251 (Adelaide Oval)
Norwood V Sturt: 6,207 (The Parade)
Port V Norwood: 5,894 (Adelaide Oval)
North V Port: 5,548 (Prospect)
Port V Central: 5,271 (Alberton)
Norwood V North: 5,225 (The Parade)
Sturt V North: 4,639 (Unley)
Central V Eagles: 4,461 (NAP Oval Elizabeth)
Central V Port: 4,370 (NAP Oval Elizabeth)
Sturt V Central: 4,229 (Adelaide Oval)

They are still good figures considering Norwood and Port.

Yob, as a Norwood fan this year, you now know what it is like for Newtown and Norths supporters EVERY YEAR.

Hopefully I can make it to SA next year to catch a couple of games.

Jeffles, I talk about Norwood, but i'm sincerely not a Norwood fan. In fact, I wouldn't buy a Norwood membership if I was on fire and a membership card came with a free bucket of piss.

I do however have a lot of Norwood mates, and I go to a lot of their games to experience the atmosphere.

Come on Westies!!! (never first and never last, and f**k all supporters, what's the rugby league equivalent of that? :))

Hmmmm. Never first and never last with few fans. Tough to find an RL equivalent. A lot of the bad clubs share their wooden spoons (Newtown, Norths and Wests).

In any event, Norwood seems the place to be re: well followed state footy.
