It would be about the 'alleged' riot that happened at WIN Stadium between the Blingers and Adelaide

The greater Sydney region has had some extreme weather today including galeforce winds.

Apparently the SES were called in because the side of the eastern roof of the Northern Stand blew off.

Although that's all I've got at the moment.

I've got to erect fete stall in Marrickville today. I don't like my chances.

i think they should put the north harbour main stand there.
it provides at least 10k adding to 25-30k and could be good seats for members.
the top level would have a picturesquare view of the ocean and would be a great stadium to wollongong.

the only problem i have is lack of undercover seating.

Waiting around in a hospital waiting room last night I was flicking through the Illawarra Mockery. Said newspaper included a story that said that only one application had been recieved for the WIN Stadium redevelopment.

Unfortunately that's all I can recall of the article.

WIN proposal unfeasible

The NSW State Government has ensured that WIN Stadium won't gain a redeveloped western grandstand at any time in the near future.

The financial viability of a $100 million proposal for the redevelopment of the western grandstand was questioned by State Cabinet and three major issues ensured that the proposal didn't receive the green light.

While the Wollongong Sportsground Trust plans to continue to work closely with the NSW State Government and Wollongong City Council in considering future development options of its site, the project's future has been thrown into disarray due to the following:

The proposal sacrificed too much of the number two training ground, which is an area that needs to be retained as green space.
Cabinet requires a larger payment for the development land than the $20 million offered by the proposal.
The proposal didn’t include a hotel component, which a 2003 feasibility study considered critical to the overall viability of the site.
The discarded proposal was put forward by Incoll/IFC Capital Ltd, who were the only developer who were interested in submitting a plan after a nine month Request For Proposal (RFP).

Incoll/IFC Capital Ltd will look to submit another proposal when the State Government decides to issue another RFP. However, the State Government is unlikely to issue this in the short term.

It all boils down to the fact that the block of land that the stadium is on is really crap for a football stadium. Too narrow, no foundations for development on the eastern side.

Anyone for flogging the land to developers and starting afresh somewhere else?

Seems like the best option now. The land would be worth a fair bit.

I can't see that happening. The trust surely has too much invested in the current site and would probably wish to keep the Stadium and the Entertainment Centre in close proximity. There is also no potential site as close to the Wollongong CBD.

The thing about WIN Stadium is that, besides from the archaic Western Grandstand, it fulfils the needs of Wollongong now and into the foreseeable future.

Eventually a grant will come that will allow for redevelopment on the Western side. Either that or the NSW property boom will reemerge and a PPP-style redevelopment will become more viable.

As to the eastern side, there are two things to keep in mind. Firstly I think that with a good western redevelopment the necessity for a large eastern facility would be nullified, at least for a long time. A good-to-decent western stand could push WIN Stadium capacity towards 24k which by all indicators is sufficient for the needs of St. George Illawarra and any potential A-League club.

Secondly I suspect that there is some potential for development on the eastern side. How much is anyone's guess - who knows what engineers could do with it? However, the construction of the link section of the Northern Stand is surely an indication both of the suitability of the land for some construction and of the Trust's future intentions to build there.

Definitely.

I personally think any extension at this point in time, is not warranted. And from photo shots it looks like a decent venue and capacity for St George.

The only thing I can think of is that Saints may demand corporate hospitality facilities along the wings. Behind the goals isn't the best view from which to entertain sponsors.

High paying members need decent views of matches but i think the gong only needs 25k max.
