for those that don't no the most famous game of rugby league was played today in front of 65k at the home of RU, twickerham..st'helens v huddersfield...

on the whole it was a good game, really good to watch as a neutral..huddersfield scored first and battled hard before losing 40 odd - 12..(i'm drunk.lol)

the scoreline belittles the game to be honest..it was far better than that.

but next year we are back at wembley (hopefully) and the challenge cup final will be once again the largest attended RL game in the world

a number of reasons.

cos huddersfield were in the final, they only sold 12k ..

venue changed at sortish notice.

i cancelled my ticket after it was anounced wembley wasn't ready, maybe others did too.

it was at the home of RU.

take your pick..

but the 65k attendance is only 5k or so below the current capacity..so it did'nt look bad.

Although I haven't actually attended a match there, when I've driven round the stadium and local suburbs I was struck by how inaccessible the place seemed. It'd be a real pain to attend a match there just coming from most of London, much less the North of England.

Leigh.

The challenge cup final have been sell-outs at Murrayfield and the millenium stadium but Twickers i think still cause a sour taste in the mouths of the opp north lot.I mean it was the RFU which stop the expansion of Rugby around the world.Miss the old wembley days.

2001-02 Wigan Warriors 21 - 12 St Helens Murrayfield 62,140
2002-03 Bradford Bulls 22 - 20 Leeds Rhinos Millennium Stadium 71,212
2003-04 St Helens 32 - 16 Wigan Warriors Millennium Stadium 73,734*

Huddersfield were gone after 30 minutes. Having played so well in the opening half hour yet only put one try on the board did it for them. They appeared to have run out of puff and from then on they hung on for dear life as Saints piled on the points. It looked like a Saints training run.

Huddersfield were incredibly one dimensional. Brad Drew had to shoulder a lot of responsibility as Chris Thorman disappointed. It was a real shame. I saw Hudds beat Leeds in the semi final and thought they were real quality.

Wellens had a great game for Saints. Long kicked into open space  (that feat alone making him worthy of any medal, let alone the Lance Todd Trophy). That Samoan RU player was impressive too. For the Giants I liked the look of Crabtree and Drew. Reilly played well in parts as did Aspinwall.

The match made me think that maybe GB will not be a hopeless in the Tri Nations as I previously thought but they are still 3rd favourites.

Back on the crowd, I didn't think it was that bad given that Hudds were playing and that there was a late change of venue. Twickenham got a bad wrap last time it hosted a final - nothing to do with RU, more about the facilities and the stadium's surrounds. Next year it will be back at Wembley. Cannot wait!

Not one to bore but if the RFU would a bunch of upperclass dicks and had given the nod to broken time payment there would of been one code not two.

Because if you weren't 22tone, you'd not have responded as you did just then.
