NZ-Great Britain Test for real: NZRL
May 12, 2006 - 10:59AM

New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) chairman Selwyn Bennett insists next month's Test against Great Britain will carry full status, despite reports to the contrary on Thursday.

Bennett issued a statement denying media reports that the NZRL had downgraded the June 27 match to non-Test status because of the likely unavailability of NRL players.

"We are happy to clarify that the Great Britain v New Zealand (game) on June 27 is a full Test match," Bennett said.

"Any player who features in the Test will be credited with a Test appearance in our official records and will be treated as full New Zealand internationals.

"Any confusion or anxiety expressed in earlier statements was probably borne more out of frustration at past problems with availability of all players from the NRL and Super League."

Bennett said there was no change to recognition of the Test at St Helens as a full international by the Rugby League International Federation.

While there was doubt over the availability of NRL players for the Test, Bennett was confident that the number and quality of players in the northern hemisphere would ensure a competitive Kiwis side.

"We haven't completely ruled out the possibility of having NRL players in the side but the effect of the playing schedules and time zone differences will obviously be a major consideration," he said.

"In reality this has always been the same issue we've faced with mid-season Tests in the southern hemisphere, except that the problems are now in reverse with NRL players unlikely to be available."

Can someone please tell me how NRL clubs can be obliged to release their NSW and QLD players for three mid season rep games each year and their Kangaroos and City/Country players for a fourth, yet the Kiwis can't get their players released for more than one game? It's not like the Warriors have fewer byes than any other team.

Leigh.

Ssshhhh Leigh. They'll hear you.

God help us if we upset an NRL club to play internationals.

Perhaps the RLIF should follow the FIFA model and agree four weeks each season when clubs worldwide are obliged to stand down and release players for provincial or international rep duties (perhaps every third week from 25th April for 12 weeks). Each rep week would start on the Friday and continue to the following Thursday with players chosen to play in rep games during that period unable to turn out for their club until after the rep match. Obviously during those four weeks you'd play your three Origin matches in Oz and the Anzac test (and probably City/Country in the same week).

But it also leaves the Kiwis free to play their own Origin series or internationals in the northern hemipshere, the minor nations like PNG and Fiji would be able to call on their NRL stars, and England, Wales and France would be able to play their own mid-season origin or international series. It would be up to the individual club competitions (NRL, SL) whether they still scheduled matches during those weeks (with byes for the most heavily affected clubs) or if they had complete breaks. But during those weeks there would be no question who has first call on players and likewise outside those weeks there would be absolutely no doubt that clubs don't have to release players.

We may see that soon Leigh. Commentators and fans in the UK constatly moan about the lack of internationals before the Tri-Nations. They believe it puts GB at a great disadvantage. Couple this with the upcoming Home Nations split, when people will be whinging about England's lack of preparation, and there will be call for more internationals.

I went to the Rl test the other week. The game was pretty good; the Aussies were great. (RL is better though watching from high up I reckon).

44000 turned up to plastic stadium. Man, is there a SERIOUS problem with Brisbane rugby league supporter culture. Me Choppies & Super Mario turned around to get simple "Aussie!!! Aussie!!!" chants going. 90% of the people in the Kangaroo Army (the chosen Australian supporters section) looked at us with a mixture of shock & confusion. They had never seen people like us before and did not understand why we were actually trying to animate them into cheering and barracking for their team.

Brisbane's rugby league population is made up of basically TV watchers. They may turn up to big games. But have NO IDEA as to how to support! All rather concerning to be brutally frank.  But at least unlike Sydney they bothered to turn up at all. So that is something.

Still I had an awesome time up in Vegas. So much so I'm considering moving up there. :D After the test we sang karaoke until the wee hours. After that walking home pissed off my face I got a tad 'confused' whilst walking through the Botanic Gardens. A tad stress and totally lost, I lay down on the grass, only to be woken up for a possum sniffing my head.

I saw Choppies and Diehard on the tele but didn't see you.

Sounds like an awesome time up there in Brisbane.

I was right there next to them all mate. Me & Super Mario from LU were waving our big flags in the front row. Mario even got on the Channel 9 news! 8)

The game was OK. Caxton Street after the game was a bit of an eye-opener as well. The place is kind of like a bar that turns into a moshpit if you step into the 'wrong' area.

I don't know whether it would be wise to go there though in blue come State of Origin night. Queenslanders take Origin so much more seriously than we do. They don't see it as just about rugby league at its highest level. They see it more about being proud of themselves & their state in the face of all the pisstakes & laughter they cop from people 'doooown saaaaaauuf"

That's one thing that disappointed me during Ch 9's coverage. The didn't cross to you guys much after tries and goals were scored. We could see the colour and the flags at the edges of other crowd shots. Not enough in the main.

I hope that the Celtic Crusaders and Cataln Dragons provide a platform that can lead us to first teams of these nations matching it with the big guns.

UsuallyI don't like the idea of "A" teams. I'd prefer to see tours against other rep sides.

E.g. Australian Country, Australian Aboriginals, Australian Reisdents (best of Qld Cup combined with NSWRL Premier League) Junior Kangaroos. Maybe one day a rep side covering the Allied Leagues of WA, SA, Vic, NT and Tas.

Wales could tour here and play PNG in a Test, these Aussie rep sides, and maybe a NZ Residents (best of Bartercard Cup) and NZ Maori.

PNG are off to france next year.

as for A teams, england and NZ do A games.why can't the aussies?

playing a state rep side won't cut it with the rest of the RL fans around the world...we want internation footy..and the aussies are ALWAYS the ones that don't want to play ball.....

can't you scratch together a second team or something, help the development of internation rugby and play somebody you lazy bums

England A comprises mainly youth players. It is "A" by name, but more of a Junior England by nature.

NZ A is the best of the Bartercard Cup, making it more like a NZ Residents team.

I am talking about an A as the 18th-34th best available players irrespective of age. Those matches I do not like in RL.

christ it's just a name.....A or junior what does it matter?

what your forgetting (maybe not) is GB is the england team with carney and cunningham....the SL leading tryscorer last year, mark caulderwood played for ENG A and would replace carney and you could pick 1 from 3 or 4 hookers to replace cunningham...and if anybody got injuried in the GB team over the past few years they were replaced by an england A player.. and i'll also remind you that these english youngster ran both australia and NZ close when they played each other between tri nations games over the past 2 years..(closer than GB)

NZ A makes perfect sense, the best team from the domestic championship..and they've toured he plenty of times..

so get together you best squad of under 24's, call them australia A and get on with it

We'd call them the Junior Kangaroos :P AND they'd beat any team you blokes could muster, including Nobby's Lions.
