…The city of the future…the envy of the world!

The closing ceremony was fantastic last night. Perhaps not as good on TV, but being there was great. Trumped the opening in almost every single respect.

Biggest cheers for Sierra Leone and John So

Worst aspects: giving the bloody crowd 5 times to cheers their heads off at the f***ing volunteers. Once is more than appropriate. Also shocking and cringeworthy was the AFL footballers marching on. most of them weren’t even footy players anyway.
Apart from that, I think Melbourne put on a fantastic show last night and throughout the past 11 days. Weather was impeccable
I’ll post pictures soon in the stadiums section.

On and cheese-eater….dont hijack this thread with your whingeing. This is not a melb/syd thread. It’s a recognition of a very well-orchestrated event.

Didn't plan to bring it up...

I don't feel the need to repeat myself, other than I'll say that I really wasn't that impressed with the closing ceremony. By the same token, I generally feel that these kind of things are :wank:, so it's not entirely a Syd/Mel thing.

Although I am interested to know why you singled me out...

I dont see why people got so uppity about the AFL players having a part in both the opening and closing ceremonies.

IIRC David Beckham was one of the final baton carriers.

True, but most people in the Commonwealth would know who Beck's is.

In your opinion, is Melbourne closer to being like Hong Kong or Adelaide? New York or Perth? London or Wellington?

The Dame Edna stuff was the biggest cringe. Well past her used-by date for selling Australia to the world. Although (s)he wasn't doing that. It was again all about Melbourne.

Meanwhile, of course, the major host city of the biggest football tournament ever held in Australia was.... Sydney.

Oh yeah, and let's not forget that the biggest sporting event ever in Australia was held in... Sydney.

Oh, and what Aussie Stereotypes do we promote?
I'm glad to hear you don't play English sports in Melbourne. Although I do hear that soccer, cricket, hockey, rugby, rugby league, tennis all have major English roots in their history. Must be boring not to be able to play those games though.

To be fair, you did say:

You guys had a great games. No doubt about it. But let's not get carried away.

Um, so when I respond to Melbourne people bashing Sydney's football credentials in a completely different thread that's grounds for you suggesting that I was going to hijack this thread?
