The Premier, Steve Bracks and Football Federation Australia Chairman Mr Frank Lowy AC, today announced that Victoria, through the Victorian Major Events Company, had secured a package of world class football events over the next four years, including the eagerly awaited Powerade Cup match between Australia and Greece.

Mr Bracks said the full World Cup Qantas Socceroos squad would play Greece on Thursday 25 May at the MCG before they headed to Germany for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in June.

The agreement between FFA and VMEC sees an annual Qantas Socceroo match in Melbourne for the next four years plus investment in the community through the forming of a joint government and football working committee.

“This package further cements Melbourne’s reputation as the sporting capital of Australia and the World’s event city,” Mr Bracks said.

“Melbourne will see some of the most significant football matches in Australia every year for the next four years.

“Football is now a mainstream sport in Australia and the Socceroos World Cup send-off game against Greece, will attract huge interest and large numbers of interstate visitors.

“It will be the European Champion, Greece’s first appearance in Australia since 1978 and is sure to ignite the passion of the huge Greek community here in Victoria.

Chairman of Football Federation Australia, Mr Frank Lowy AC said Australia’s 2006 FIFA World Cup campaign will start in Melbourne.

“The full strength squad we are taking to Germany will play against Greece. We’re bringing the highest quality football to Victoria,” Mr Lowy said.

“As reigning European Champions Greece are a formidable opposition and will provide the ideal start for Australia’s World Cup assault.”

The four year package includes:

• 2006 - Powerade Cup match between Australia and Greece on Thursday 25 May at the MCG

• 2007 - Powerade Cup match between the Qantas Socceroos and one of the world’s best football nations

• 2008 - FIFA World Cup Qualifier - Australia’s first World Cup match since its membership of the Asian Football Confederation

• 2009 - FIFA World Cup Qualifier that could possibly decide if Australia qualifies for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals in South Africa.

“The package provides a great opportunity to raise Victoria’s international profile and generate enormous economic activity,” Mr Bracks said.

Chairman of the Victorian Major Events Company, Sir Rod Eddington, said the MCG game would be the only match the Qantas Socceroos would play in Australia before the World Cup.

“VMEC won the package for Melbourne after tough negotiations,” he said.

“With the Volvo Ocean Race, World Surf Lifesaving Championships, the Commonwealth Games, the Australian Grand Prix and now Australia versus Greece game – There is no better place to be right now than in Melbourne.”

He said the matches in 2008 and 2009 would generate significant tourism and broadcast opportunities into important tourist markets for Victoria such as Japan, China, India and Korea.

Coca-Cola Australia Managing Director Mr Gareth Edgecombe said they were proud to give Australians the chance to wish the team all the best in Germany through the Powerade Cup.

"Powerade and Coca-Cola are proud sponsors of both the FIFA World Cup and the FFA and Socceroos, so it’s only fitting then that this World Cup preparation match takes place as the Powerade Cup," he said.

The four year agreement also includes a significant component of development funding that will assist with the grass-roots development of football and increase the participation of the sport in Victoria.

Fantastic news for us Melburnians! A guaranteed Australia game every year for the next 4 years, against hopefully some big Footballing nations!

Would imagine with our Greek community that the May 25th game will be a sell out, just be interesting to see the ratio of Australian and Greek fans!

Well done to Bracksy and the VMEC for securing this deal.

Sporting capital of Australia!

I hope Melbourne paid a stupid amount of money for this. The MCG is a poor place to watch football and the game against Greece should have been played in Brisbane. I can see they place being full of "greeks" while 10-20000 aussies sit in silence.

Hmmm... A sell out (or bloody close to) of a 100k seater providing a huge amount of moeny for the FFA in one night... or a medicocre crowd left silent.

Melbourne has the 3rd largest greek community of any city in the world, 1st outside of Greece, they would have been 100% braindead to have it played anywhere else.

Get off your Melbourne hating chair and view things from a balanced perspective.

What a stupid comment, most soccer grounds (or alot) have the same playing surface size as the MCG
The 2002 World Cup final in Japan was actually played in an oval sized ground

Even though there would be heaps of Greeks, most of them at the same time would be barracking for both teams

Can't we have a proper discussion without flaming other cities.

What's the second biggest now? I always thought Melbourne was second to Athens.

The FFA say they want to take big football games to the other cities in Australia, i can understand greece going to melbourne of course, i just hope that other cities, in particular Brisbane with Australias best rectangle stadium, get a chance to play some meaningful matches.

Hopefully they can also use these matches to leverage state and federal governments into upgrading their rectangular stadiums.

Yeah, just like the turks supported both countires. The MCG will end up being a sea of blue & white for the final "home" game before the world cup.

Brisbane has a stunning football ground and I cannot remember when they last had an international football game.

If the FA is serious about developing football around the country the games need to be spread around the country.

and they will be

but the FFA is not so wealthy they can afford to turn down an opportunity like this...so it was an acceptable decision.

Besides which I think we're all jumping the gun a bit here. What have they promised? One international per year to Melbourne. Surely in Asia we can expect at least two to three or four home games each year including at least one post World Cup game towards the end of this year? In due course I fully expect to see similar announcements for Sydney and collectively the "minor" capitals.

It's kind on the 'ol eyes. Still living out of the local hostel and unemployeed so not throwing myself about too much (but with free net access who needs to?). A picture postcard city and I can certainly see why it wins awards for livability. That said North American culture is going to take a bit of getting used to after the old dart and the emerald isle.

Also a better timezone for keeping in contact with Oz (now -18 hours from EST) but I'm already suffering withdrawals from the lack of access to Aussie sport - and the footy season hasn't even started yet!

Again this shows the difference between Sydney and Melbourne. Melbourne needs and are willing to fork out the money to bring in events such as Grand Prix, Soccer matches etc but as far as being CHOSEN to host events, in the end its always Sydney. (Olympics, Pacific Forum, Catholic Youth day). The impression I get from visiting Melbourne is that it is like a jealous little kid screaming "Look at me! Look what I can do! Look at What I've got so I'm better" Congratulations to Melbourne for securing these events but don't get carried away with this "Sporting Capital" centre of the world mentality. Your lucky you have a government who feels the need to spend the billions to attract events to get noticed on the world stage while at the end of the day - in the eyes of the world - Sydney is Australia.

Leigh's right. Australia will get more than one inbternational per year. It's just that at least one of them will be in Melbourne each year.

I noticed the games for 2007 and 2009.

2007 - "Powerade Cup match between the Qantas Socceroos and one of the world’s best football nations" There would be no one confirmed for that at this stage. It is just a promise. Where do you draw the line at "one of the best". top 10, top 20, anyone above Australia? Another big migrant group in Melbourne?

2009 - "FIFA World Cup Qualifier that could possibly decide if Australia qualifies for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals in South Africa." Well unlike recent campaigns it is unlikely to come down to one game. Though as they say it could.

Spin at its best.

I have no biggy with Melbourne getting one game per year as long as there are more games that are rotated around the capitals.

and you just had to bring up the bolded in a thread about Melbourne's place on the map...damn fool!! :P

The FFA hasn't done anything we didn't expect them to do now that we've get regular competitive matches to spread around. Although the PR spin in the press release is amusing - Bob Carr made the same song and dance when the WCQ was 'awarded' to Sydney (TS was the only big ground in the country that was available). Ultimately, the deal is little different to what Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth could broker. And they probably will as well.
Good news for everyone.

What a Moronic statement, I have had many discussions with other forumer’s on this site, but your stupidity and arrogance take the cake Zakman. Is Sydney better known overseas, yes, you have spent many millions telling the world, but in Australia we are a little smarter. The only ones who think Sydney is Australia are a few arrogant Sydneysiders.
Sydney has tried on a few occasions to try to get events on the basis of "We are Sydney, give it to us" Think F1 when you went up against Melbourne, but lost out as you did not have the facility as you wanted to send it to Eastern Creek, or MotoGP that you stuffed up at Eastern Creek. Even the failed bid for the 1996 Olympics, Australia chose Melbourne over Sydney and then the Olympics chose Coca-Cola over everyone else…lol

Pull your head in Zakman, uninformed comments like yours just confirm the ridiculous arrogance coming out of Sydney at times.

John Howard - the best PM Sydney has ever had!!!
