Australian (Aussie) Rules or AFL

Postby Ian » Wed Jan 11, 2006 8:36 pm

Australian (Aussie) Rules or AFL ?

I would like to see the links on the left refer to Australian Rules Football as just that, or Aussie Rules Footy.

The AFL is the Australian Football League, it is a league that plays Aussie Rules, it is not a code of football.

There are many leagues around Aust. that play footy, the only one that should be refered to as the AFL, is the Australian Football League.

There'd be a whole lot less confusion if there were separate sections for SANFL, WAFL, VFL and VFA.

Unfortunately both terms you mentioned won't fit into the space provided. The only alternative is 'Aussie Rules' for this site.

Australia's two biggest general sports websites, Foxports & Sportal now refer to is simply as AFL. Fox Sports used to call it AFL Football (before changing Soccer to Football), and Sportal used to call it Aussie Rules.

Yes it may be a little confusing to some, but Soccer is officially known as Football in this country now, hence its name on this site, and hence Aussie Rules not simply referred to as Football.

oh and also, why did you need to open another thread for this?

I think Aussie Rules would be a good alternative, as it still refers to the whole code, not just bundelling everyone in to one league.

PS: the AFL name is the only gripe I've got about the site, this is a fantastic site.

If it aint broke, dont fix it!

IMO there should be no confusion with the links down the side. IIRC it was simply referred to as Football on this site, but when Soccer changed to Football, there needed to be something to differentiate the two. Adding AFL in front did that easily.

As per Jeffles - Aust Football.

Alternatively (to be consistent) - have the major pro league names for them all i.e.
AFL
ALeague
NRL
Super 12 (or whatever number it is)

Foxtel and Sportal have got it wrong!
oderint dum metuant (Gaius Caligula).
