Flights to Sydney were most certainly not booked out as of this morning, in fact they were available for just over $200 return, leave Thursday come back Sunday. Plenty of times as well on Virgin and Qantas.

As opposed to the nearly $2000 return a flight from Perth to Melbourne was costing on Qantas, with no Virgin seats at all. I had a look to see what I might be up for should my team decide to get rid of the idiot coach and put one with a half decent football brain in it's place. After looking at the websites, I actually feel better about supporting a sh*t club.
I reckon the best bet if your team is half a chance around June/July is booking the plane tickets then for 1/6th of the price, and hoping your team makes it and you get a GF ticket. And if they don't, go to Melbourne anyway and soak up the atmosphere.

My Dad got the last flight leaving at 12:00am Saturday Morning.

I was reading in the paper QANTAS are selling flights

Perth - Uluru - Melbourne
Perth- Brisbane - Melbourne

Because of the demand...

15,000 people are heading over, and really flying is the only option.

Although there was another 15,000 people that bought tickets mid-season, they already thought the Eagles would make it.

there expecting 30,000 there...I would think it could be as much as 35,000

Stadiumking, did you get your ticket?

There won't be 30,000 toast supporters there, they won't get the match tickets. Outside the club's 14,000 allocation as a competing club, the club only got another 1,000. The rest are pretty hard to come by.

I thought it was 16,000 tickets...

Anyhow, whatever the figure...it shows you how badly we need another ariline for our flight charges.

We still only have 2 airlines...while Adelaide has 3

The best thing would be a Demons Member, 20,000 members - 16,000 tickets allocated :)

There are some benefits for clubs which have small memberships.

Anyhow, I think the capacity looking at the ground will get to about 105-107,000 people...which will be fantastic.

waiting nervously for 5 hours from the early hours of Sunday morning secured my tickets! WOOOOOOOOOOO ....I'm off to the Grannie!!
Not the best seats....half forward flank top of Ponsford....but I don't care one bit! trust the ticketmaster system to nationally stuff up when I was 20 metres from the booth....had a very frantic wait for 40 minutes watching people around me ring up and get their tickets by phone (I decided to take the punt and just stay in the line)

yep. the rest of the Melbourne supporters are either MCC members or would watch the match from the TV sets at their Bulla lodges.

I'm impressed ... very impressed ... with this post, Jeffles. Good quircky (and ironical) historical point (and was how the bloods became to be called the Swans). But, being a Leaguie and from Sydney, how did you know this?? - afterall most AFL supporters wouldn't know!

And congratulations, Stadiumking, on securing those precious GF tickets - no such thing as a bad seats when its the GF. Hope you enjoy the day (if not the result!), you lucky bastard.

Give me credit mate! I've been watching the Swans since Healey, Cordy, Toohey and Carroll.

Not really. Jetstar coming to Perth might mean more budget seats, but it also means less Qantas flights. They're not stupid enough to try and make Jetstar compete with Qantas.

And you'd get the same problem with 10 airlines. No-ones going to offer cheap seats when they're going to get snapped up no matter what price you sell them for. I just saw on the news some people are going via Auckland or Singapore!

Alas, that's not how it works. The total allocation for competing club members is about 25,000, and they pro rata it across all competing club members. The Swans allocation was about 9,000.

Also Melbourne will always have a lower than the norm membership count as a hefty percentage of them will be MCC members instead without taking the football club membership option.

God some people will do anything to get there!! The cost to travel via Singapore would be quite high, I have a quote with Singapore Airlines for $1107.01 one way!! Though that is cheaper than the Business Class airfare from Perth to Melbourne which is $1353 one way. The travel time via Singapore is approx 17 hours.

For those still in Perth trying to book travel, Qanats still had some 'cheap' fares at $767 one way.
I know it easy for people here in Sydney to get there, but to pay in excess of $1000 just to get there is beyond me. I know it is a unique opportunity, but for 2 and a half hours of football, I'm sure it is not worth laying out thousands of dollars for the opportunity.
I would rather spend it on a lovely holiday overseas!!

Just to let you understand, 50% of Eagles supporters have money to burn...this is just pocket money

Added the biggest sporting team in the state, basically our state team is playing in the holy grail.

This is bigger then Ben Hur, many people have it in there dream to attend there clubs grand final...they have waited 11 years

I personally believe all grand finals are the same, great experiences, even the WAFL Grand Final, had that atmosphere even with 22,570, while the 2000 NSL Grand Final would have just as much pre-match entertainment, fun, atmosphere to it then the AFL GF...you had to be there to believe it...especially after Bobby scored.

It is a big call to pay $1-2k to see your team play in a GF, but I think it is worth it for sure, no matter how much money you have.

It can be a once in a lifetime opportunity, awesome atmosphere and experience, lifetime memories… this is what I keep telling myself anyway, no matter how many people say that I’m crazy.

No way - nothing compares with the AFL pre-match entertainment! Who can ever forget the batmobile at Waverley? Just check out the brilliant errr tosh served up in the last 2 years (apart from flag waving goal umpires)
2003 - finalists from Australian Idol! Could it get any worse?? Well yes it can - trumped by Kath'n'Kim last year.
I'm confident of yet another new low in pre-match "entertainment" this Saturday. One of the great traditions of the AFL GF - the bar set lower each year.

BTW - The O&M GF had Mike Brady singing 'One Day in September' followed by his signaure song 'Up there Cazaly' - and he totally stuffed up the words. Obviously hadn't sang it enough times before!!
Still - best finish to a GF I've ever seen - anywhere!
