With the 500k figure taken in a loose/had a couple sense, geographies that are candidates on that criterion alone:

Canberra-Qbn - 400k. Good on 'em, I've done my 7 years
Sunshine Coast - 300k (and surrounds)
Gong - 300k (would need a broader base)
Gold Coast - 600k
Tasmania - ~500k (can it be done though)
NQ - Townsville/Cairns (can it be done..... )

After that there's the odd region here and there that's big but not that big. Mandurah/Southern Perth, Geelong, Ballarat&Bendigo, Riverina.

Going off this uninspiring list I think the strategy is more top focused and carving slices out of the big pie, rather than grooming small regions for their own a-league teams. I'm cold on the idea of a Riverina team because of the traffic fine I got in Wagga, the pig was a total bitch.

In the case of NZ, meh, their energies should be on the NZ football championship.

As far as significant urban areas are concerned, we can basically round the figures to the nearest 500k...

Want 28 clubs?

8 Sydney 3,908,642
7 Melbourne 3,707,530
4 Brisbane 1,874,427
3 Perth 1,627,576
2 Adelaide 1,103,979
1 Gold Coast-Tweed Heads 533,660
1 Canberra-Queanbeyan 391,474
1 Newcastle 308,308
1 Central Coast 297,713

Hunter region can take Newcastle to over 500k
Central Coast can't make it unless they leave out a northern Sydney team and expect the coast to cover that

Aussie rules is the dominant code in Melbourne, and within the last decade the AFL made a concerted push to relocate North Melbourne to the Gold Coast. That move would've left 8 teams. The idea that Melbourne's far smaller football community could sustain 7 professional teams is patently ridiculous. Not you of course dibo, as you're merely applying the 500k cocept to the real world.

The problem with large numbers of teams in an urban area is not simply that the city isn't big enough. In my lifetime Melbourne has doubled in size, and yet only has 1 less AFL team, and Melbourne still isn't big enough. It's a nonsense. The reality of having 7, 8, 9 teams is that there will always be a team that is the 7th, 8th, 9th largest! No amount of redistribution changes that.

The ACT has a population measure that they call C+1 which is the population within 1 hours drive of the CBD. This figure is growing at about 1.5% pa and the 2011 projections had it passing 500k in 2013 or 2014. There are 15k registered football players there.

The NSW Gov has a region called Lower Hunter and its population in 2011 was 541,250. This region accounts for about 60% of the 48k registered players in the Football NNSW Federation.

The population of the Illawarra is 385k which I think is part of the reason it has been mentioned as part of the area served by the proposed Southern Sydney club. The population of the Southern Sydney sub region is 600k with growth through to 2031 taking it to 660k. This region alone has about 40k registered players which is about the same as Melbourne and there is another 12k in the Illawarra.

Just last week the WA released a document call Perth And Peel@3.5m which has the South Perth/Peel region having 500k population with growth through to 2050 taking it to 1.2m. The region starts at Cockburn and Armadale and covers all LGA's down to Mandurah. The Lark Hill Sports Complex is meant to service the Rockingham/Peel region and there appears to be plenty of room to develop a stadium.

C+1 basically means Canberra +Queanbeyan +Murrumbateman +Goulburn +Yass

Goulburn & Yass contribute working class commuters that can't afford to live in Canberra. I worked in an office there where every single person drove in from Goulburn.

The funny thing though is Canberrans sh*t on these towns every chance they get. Except when they suddenly need them to pump the numbers. Suddenly it's CanberraQueanbeyan.

Worth noting though that the farmboys reaching out to Yass, Gunning etc tend to go Brumbies over Tahs.

All of this gives impetus for the region to have an aussie rules side... yet the Peel Thunder are the most poorly supported club of the WAFL.

Perth's struggles in maintaining a strong presence in the a-league is branding. The fundamentals are there, and more there than Adelaide.

It probably won't get to the point that the FFA loses patience starts a rival franchise ala WSW. They're just waiting for Sage to f**k off instead.

Preliminary figures for Football NSW this season show just under 226k registered players up 16k on last season. Football NNSW earlier this season said registrations were heading towards 54k. The total for NSW of 280k is only 50k less than AFL for the whole of the country.

Regos are up about 6% this year I think. That's not bad when you're coming off a big base.

And that is club players only, doesn't count (or double count) school, six-a-side, futsal or other forms of the game. The challenge is turning more participants into fans!

DT article today mentioned 7% for Football NSW. Recent articles had Victoria up 10% to 62k+, ACT up 10% to 15k- and NNSW up 14% to 54k. Between those 4 Federations its 30k more registered outdoor club footballers.

As you say the challenge is turning them into fans which is a major issue raised in the Whole of Football Plan. It said about 25% of registered players identify with an A-League club while for League and AFL the figure is about 75%. Time and FTA are the solutions to increasing the figure for football I think.

New salary caps.

Provided you jig your list around the concessions you can now get $3 million of cattle before the 2 marquees, and both marquees can be from anywhere. Also the guest players can sign for 14 weeks which makes them a smaller burden.
