Re: AFL 2012
For every kid that laughs at that there is;
* A Sydney NRL supporting kid who'd laugh as hard if you did the same to an inflatable Willie Mason
* A southerner who would make sneering references about "bum sniffing" in scrums.
Although he was being serious, it's a ridiculous point to make. Sydney doesn't hate AFL. Sydney is one of the most tolerant cities on earth when it comes to supporting multiple codes of football on a regular basis.

"Tolerates" is at the opposite end of the spectrum to "supports", "wants" or "encourages".Jeffles wrote:Sydney is one of the most tolerant cities on earth when it comes to supporting multiple codes of football on a regular basis.

Sydney tolerates plenty of things that people don't support, want or encourage - not just foreign sports

Maybe I should have said Sydney is one of the mst accepting cities on earth.Nines wrote:"Tolerates" is at the opposite end of the spectrum to "supports", "wants" or "encourages".Jeffles wrote:Sydney is one of the most tolerant cities on earth when it comes to supporting multiple codes of football on a regular basis.
I think the evidence is also there that Sydney supports, wants or encourages.

You seem to be implying AF is a foreign sport.bazza wrote:Sydney tolerates plenty of things that people don't support, want or encourage - not just foreign sports

Then there is a lot of evidence to the contrary.Jeffles wrote:Maybe I should have said Sydney is one of the mst accepting cities on earth.Nines wrote:"Tolerates" is at the opposite end of the spectrum to "supports", "wants" or "encourages".Jeffles wrote:Sydney is one of the most tolerant cities on earth when it comes to supporting multiple codes of football on a regular basis.

A lot of rl fans hate RU.
A lot of rl fans hate AFL.
The media wasn't welcoming for the Swans andnow it's "WAR" for the GWS.
Soccer fans have a complete disregard for other football codes by demanding sole use of the word "Football".

Re: AFL 2012
On the first two points, feelings of antagonism between supproters of rival codes is not unique to Sydney or even to RL fans.Nines wrote:A lot of rl fans hate RU.

On the point about the Swans, how were they not welcomed? Which articles in 1982 say the Swans weren't welcomed? Moreover, the media's attitude to GWS has been one of critical analysis mixed with "Phil Gould doom and gloom"
Re; soccer/football terminology - that's not unique to Sydney.
There is evidence in favour of the proposition Sydney is more accepting of the four football codes that is unique to Sydney.
* All four football codes have had competitions in Sydney unbroken for over 100 years.
* Sydney was the first city to have professional clubs representing all four football codes.
* Sydney's newspapers were the first to employ full time correspodents for all four football codes.
