Agree, he'd be much more helpful in Sydney from both a playing and marketing point of view.

I guess his preference would be Sydney anyway because he’s from here and his parents still live here. It’s slightly curious to me though that Galatasary re-signed him for another year but now seem happy to release him. (I'm assuming that's the case as there's been no mention of any transfer fee)

If Kewell doesn’t come to Sydney I would expect Emerton will after the next PL season. I think Emerton might actually be more of an asset to the team then Harry would. He’s less injury prone and has been effective for Blackburn after being re-tasked as a central midfielder. Obviously though there's no comparison between the two as far as public interest goes.

I see Eddie McChins has used the Kewell saga to have a pot-shot at the AFLPA in his Sunday Hun column, and of course the obligatory Sokkah-bad, foody-good snipe right at the end:(
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/opinion/squ ... 6091436811

Would be great for the league if Kewell signs, but in the likely event he pulls a LeBron and takes his talents to *****[not Australia], domestic football will/would survive without him, there's a bit of hysteria around about 'saving' the HAL. So what happens if he gets injured in wk2? Are we suddenly un-saved?

I feel you're right about Emmo. IIRC he was seriously considering coming back this year if Blackburn had been relegated. In the end he scored a wonder goal and Rovers stayed up, but I think the thought is in his head now:).Even in a years time Emmo at Sydney would elevate that team into finals contention IMO.

Celtic wound up their Australan pre-season tour last night in Melbourne, downing the Victory 1-0 at AAMI Park leaving the Central Coast Mariners as the only HAL team to beat last yers SPL runners up.

VICTORY 0 CELTIC 1

Scorer: Scott Brown 78 minutes.

Crowd: 20,794 at AAMI Park

but the real talking point for the night in the absence of TV cioverage ws the disgraceful behaviour of VicPol via its tweets during and after the event:(

Other than 9/11 truthers I don't think I've ever met a more paranoid person than you.

Is there anyone out there who you don't think is on a crusade against soccer in Australia?

Of course if you are not a football fan you would take that position..it must be me that is paranoid...but in the face of evidence that police taunted fans at a game via social media, you still think I'm the crazy one....you must be Victorian. I wouldn’t call it a conspiracy, just a complete lack of understanding of the culture of support in football as opposed to Australian Rules or Rugby League by Vicpol. Please point out in my initial post where I've called it a 'conspiracy'. I merely called it disgraceful and the good inspector agreed, calling it "not suitable" and apologizing.

Well blow me down, you could knock me over with a feather...VicPol have actually come out and apologized...On Neil Mitchell's 3AW morning show(ohh the delicious Irony!)
UPDATE:
Victoria Police has apologised to soccer fans in the wake of accusations the official police twitter feed taunted fans.
Inspector Mick Beattie, who ran the police operation at Wednesday night's Melbourne Victory v Celtic clash, said there was a breakdown in communication between the force's operations arm and its media arm.
"It casts soccer supporters in a negative light and they behaved extremely well last night." Inspector Mick Beattie told Neil Mitchell, before adding he was 'oblivious' to the tweets being posted. "This was not suitable."
There were 14 evictions at the game for 'fairly minor stuff', the Inspector said.
Not one of the 20,000 fans was arrested on the night.

On an actual football related note, it appears McChins was wrong as Harry Kewell was not unveiled last night but MVFC CEO had this to say:
"Victory chief executive Richard Wilson saying that nothing had been signed, although the pair were close to sealing an agreement." -> from www.theage.com.au

post-game quotes from the coach included:
Victory manager Mehmet Durakovic said he could not have been happier with the performance of his side.

"I'm very happy with the boys,'' "They have been back just six days from a long layoff. I thought everyone was fantastic in their commitment, their performance, their commitment, it was a different class.

Durakovic reserved special praise for New Zealand international, Marco Rojas, after the match.
"He's just going to be that X-factor,'' he said.
"That unpredictable ability of him when he gets the ball, you don't know really what he's going to do, just the way he runs at players he's so deceptive.
"He's just got unbelievable touches and the vision that he's got is phenomenal so I'm looking forward to him having a big season like also with Solorzano and the rest of the team as well.''

Have the Tards actually won a game under Durakovic? If not, I hope he wins the job full time.

A very good point & almost well made:), Unfortunately wiki tells me that their stellar ACL record post-EM was 1-1-1 = 4 points (the 4-0 loss to Kawasaki Frontale away preceeded the sacking of Merick)and then a 0-0 result away to beijing before a 1-0 win over the Japanese team at the tard-dome via a Musc*nt pen before losing to Seongnam 3-2 in Korea to crash out of the ACL at the bottom of their group:) Still, would be great for their overblown sense of entitlement to be re-acquainted with the foot of the ladder IMO
United has now won 2 in a row against our arch enemy and I am sure I'm not the only one in Red who'd like to see that continue. We could all be singing for Mehm by the end of this season if he has a shocker as gaffer;)

I like South Park's angle: the 9/11 conspiracies are government conspiracies

Interview with Adelaide United's exciting new Socceroo signing Dario Vidosic
Quote:
Reds' high hopes for Mr Versatile
Val Migliaccio
The Advertiser
July 18, 2011 12:00am

ADELAIDE United has snared the most intelligent signing of the new A-League season now that Dario Vidosic has signed a three-year deal.

The former Brisbane Roar attacker had just completed four years in Germany one of the toughest league's on the planet before Adelaide came calling.

At just 24 Vidosic is still a few years from his peak, but the Reds faithful will see a mature, clever 2010 FIFA World Cup Socceroo in action at Hindmarsh this season.

Vidosic said he was confident Adelaide have a squad now good enough to win the elusive title - or as fans and players call the trophy "the toilet seat".

This is what Dario says.

VM: What do you think you can bring to Adelaide United?

DV: I want to show that I'm enjoying my game playing with a smile, working hard. I think it's everything, as the game is now, to defend from the front and to walk away feeling you've given everything. I mean personally I like to create, go forward and score, I don't like to go back. I want my teammates to pass forward, so from me you'll see a very attacking style of play and whatever else the coach wants from me. I've learnt a few things after playing in Nuremberg I've had experiences playing in right back. I've also learnt playing on the right and the left. Against Bayern Munich I was the lone striker, so I can bring in versatility to play in many positions.

VM: Your dad, Rado, is an assistant at Brisbane Roar, the obvious move was back home after you trained with the champions earlier this year, what happened?

DV: I sat down with my agent and we looked at the options and I thought training with the Roar I'd enjoy being there. The atmosphere was great. I wasn't a player with the Roar but I was going in with my dad and just training there. I spoke to Rini, and he was keen. I would've played with Roar, and to stay with my parents seemed logical but it's a good thing to get away from that. I wanted to come to a club that is striving to achieve, and Roar have already achieved all that. I also spoke to (former teammate and new housemate) Spase (Dilevski) and he said I'd love it here. He's helped me, I'm staying with him until I get settled.

VM: What was it like in Germany?

DV: Football wise I learnt a lot and I became a better player. I didn't get a lot of opportunities and times I felt I deserved to play. There are plenty of stories that I could tell you and you'd be in disbelief. There were a few situations that were unfortunate, that I don't even know how I got myself into. I was just playing football and that's all I concentrated on. There was nothing negative like going out or anything like that, it was all just misunderstandings within the club. Being in the first year and the second year, being between the first team and second team and between the two coaches and not communicating well and it all came back down on me. And that just kept going on and on like that sometimes I scored two games in a row and got benched a third game; it was a little bit frustrating at times. Also with the club in the relegation game and not to come on and get game time, after everyone said I played a major part. I helped them to get seven points for the team at a vital part of the season.

VM: Mathew Leckie is in Monchengladbach. What can you say to him, a freshman coming in?

DV: I think he just needs to work. They love the defensive side, not just the attacking. That's something they look for in Germany and that's the way they play. It's your own individual flair and characteristics and what you can bring to the team.

VM: What do you do when you're not playing football?

DV: I have fiancee, Tegan, and we'll be with Spase until I find another place. She's helped me a lot, and she'll work. But she needs to find some work down here, she's done an English degree, like business English, and she's done a little bit of hairdressing and modelling, so she'll be looking good. She's almost like my personal stylist.

VM: What else do you do in your spare time?

DV: When I'm at home I just relax. We don't mind going into the city for a coffee, you know that kind of stuff. When I'm at home I play Playstation. I got a DJ set from Germany, so I mix some stuff up if I want to.

VM: Are you captain material? Adelaide doesn't have a captain at the moment.

DV: I don't know. I think it's something I'd like to do. It's something I've set myself to do, maybe just one day to lead a team out. I'd love to have that, it would be an honour to captain the team and to lead them out. But at the moment I'm not concentrating on that.

VM: Your background is Croatian, are you close to the community?

DV: Yeah, definitely. I've heard good things, on Friday nights they put on a good roast, fish and the cevapcici. So it's definitely one thing I'll be doing, going down to watch a few games and to help out the community. I want to put on some good football for the fans too, hopefully win a few things here, and qualify for the ACL. All that's missing is the toilet seat I think they call it, and I'd love to be holding that up.
