I wouldn't mind them if we used them to our advantage - namely scheduling all the 3 way byes during June and July to minimise the impacts of shitty weather on crowds.

The crowds continue to impress.

There are a lot of lopsided scores in the SANFL. Is the salary cap working ior are there other issues at play?

For one thing, SANFL clubs (with the exception of West) don't flood or choke the life out of games to make the scoreline respectable. Richmond would be belted by 20 goals each week if Terry Wallace didn't chuck all his players back to try and save his coaching career for him.

With regard to the salary cap, no, it's is not working - but that's not the reason for the score blowouts. One of the convicted cap cheats, South Adelaide, was done by 100 points!

Centrals are miles ahead of the pack because they're just a professional unit across all parts of their business. They recruit well, they have a good development zone, their lineup is reasonably settled from year to year, they have plenty of financial resources to support the football department, list goes on.

Eagles are in the same boat, but they're about 3-4 years behind Centrals who was the first club to invest heavily in their off field operations.

Sturt's improvement this year is mystifying. They don't really have the money to splash on football department or recruits yet (give it a couple of years before their two new social clubs start pumping in serious money). The only explanation is that their new coach Rick Macgowan is a genius. That and forward Brant Chambers is absolutely on fire - I think he's up to 70 goals in 14 games

Norwood and Port are middle of the road because they don't have the weight to bully other clubs anymore. When these two were at the top we didn't have salary caps, and Centrals, North and the Eagles didn't have pokies.

South is well advanced in setting the foundation for a succesful club in the mould of centrals. But like Centrals for 30 years, they haven't broken through yet. Also holding them back is their relatively high churn of recruits each year, usually because they promise big dollars that they can't deliver.

West is sh*t.

Thats true. It also applies to all leagues, both semi-pro and true grass roots levels, below AFL level, as they simply don't have the fitness base of the full-time AFL players to properly flood. This is one reason for the resurgence in popularity (and hence crowds) at the grass roots levels below AFL.

BTW - Is Damien Cupido now the fattest South African playing Australian football?

Yes.

He's also the thinnest.

And in breaking news, Westies has announced The Weed won't be offered a contract for next year. He will coach the side until a suitable replacement is found.

Word is the Nor East Gilles Plains' pokies are all full up by noon each day. This is fantastic news for a number of reasons. Firstly, this will make the Norwood Footy Club squillions, which will further enhance the SANFL's profile as an elite sporting competition. Secondly, that's another nail in the waffle's coffin. Thirdly, all that money being lost on poker machines means the deros in gilles plains/windsor gardens have less money to spend on knives and drugs.

Now, that last bit won't fly with the no pokie crowd, but let's make one thing clear here. You, as individual, do not have the right to speak for others, especially when you would deny them the freedoms that our grandfathers fought for (well, the real aussies' grandfathers anyway). Countries with firmly entrenched centralised value systems all turn pear shaped. Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union being prime examples. If you would deny ordinary battling aussies the right to have a punt, then you hate the diggers, hate jews, and are a communist who supports nuclear weapons proliferation, so go f**k yourself.

Today's blockbuster at Unley turned out being a bit of a fizzer, with Sturt trouncing North. Highlights of the day were 1) The ground didn't smell like poodle sh*t like usual and 2) Clinton Alleway kicking in from behind the point post - straight in to the point post. Didn't matter if you were sturt or north, he wore it from the 4,000 or so in attendance.
