Giants got more than the Roosters did tonight - playing in a stadium that holds twice Skoda. This means the Giants crowd was higher than the average for the 4 Sydney NRL games this w/e.

The SCG is being redeveloped but the Swans still haven't nudegd a sell out. I don't know how many people are refusing to go to the SCG because they can no longer sit behind the goals. But human nature being what it is, it might be a factor for a few.

I counted the crowd for the Giants-Tigers game using the seating map from the showgrounds thread and the foxfootyHD replay. The actual attendance was 4,300 give or take 300. Not 7k. /nerdtroll

Over what?
Giants had bigger crowd than Roosters?
Swans have a sellout against Geelong?
Giants sponsor a London AFC?

.

I preferred them when they were the Dulwich dragons. You probably hadn't heard of them, they were less derivative back then.

I notice yet another Roy Masters article in today's SMH attacking GWS & the AFL. Is he ever going to stop?

Bizarrely, it was an almost exact copy of his last anti-Giants tripe - not a new thing in it. I suppose with all the turmoil at Fairfax there wasn't an editor with enough balls to reject it.

For a Leaguie he's pretty obsessed with AFL... :?

Lonesome George, the 100-year-old giant Galapagos Island tortoise, has died, leaving no progeny and sending a bad omen to Greater Western Sydney Giants, Sydney's new AFL team. The Pinta Island sub-species, a long-time symbol of the Galapagos, is now officially extinct.

George, a two-metre-long tortoise, was found dead in his corral at the weekend by his keeper of 40 years.

The Herald has published a couple of columns recently, comparing Lonesome George to the Giants, particularly in terms of their protected species status. Both tortoise and team have enjoyed privileged treatment by the media, despite abject failures.

The Giants lost to the third worst team, Melbourne, by 78 points on Sunday, yet commentators still enthuse about their exciting midfield.

Lonesome George has been a dismal disappointment in love-making, refusing to mate with the genetically similar Espanola tortoise.

Yesterday, GWS chief executive David Matthews accepted the comparison good naturedly, saying: ''The Giants are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Lonesome George. We do intend to enjoy his level of longevity but we also expect to have more success than he did.''

Both giants have had millions of dollars spent on them. The GWS variety has been the beneficiary of funding at all levels of government - federal, state, territory and two local - Blacktown and Wagga Wagga.

It is a rubbish article.

But this is interesting:
Quote:
''The AFL is a full-time carer to all its 18 clubs. Every club gets a distribution but it's a disequal one. We'll turn over $33 million this year and raise half this by ourselves.''

That's a lot of subsidies from the AFL. They'll get $7.5m as their cut of the equal club distribution (though not exactly pulling their weight for generating that income) and $6.5m per year until 2016 as a developing area grant. It's all planned out by the AFL but will they be weened off Vlad's teat by 2016?

David Matthew's response was priceless. Humor is probably the only way to deal with that grump, Masters!
