T20 Big Bash League (from 2011/12)

Post by cam »

The new T20 Big Bash League will replace the existing KFC T20 Big Bash next summer and it'll be a city-based competition with 8 franchises. Victoria and New South Wales will have 2 franchises each. Looks like Cricket Victoria are planning on having two Melbourne-based teams. I'd much prefer to see a team representing regional Victoria, based at Geelong's Skilled Stadium, and maybe play a game or two in Ballarat. There's a survey going around at the moment you can fill out, they've listed the potential names for one of the teams, they are dead-set dreadful!

- Hammer
- Mercury
- Guns
- Maxx
- Dukes
- Majors

And we thought Giants was bad!

Might go the way of the IPL, we could have the Melbourne Australians and the Sydney Super Kings taking on the Kings XI Perth or the Brisbane Royal Challengers.

I don't think we'll see many Indians in the comp though, who is going to pay $2 Million for Gautam Gambhir?

These two comments worry me a bit...

"McKenna said creative agencies in Australia and the United States had been asked to make each of the team's names, colours and logos more vibrant and dynamic for the Generation Y target audience."

and

"McKenna said that the uniforms would surprise cricket fans "It's a matter of coming up with something new and creative," he said. "There's 50 weeks until the first ball of the new competition is bowled and we still have a lot of work to do."

Get ready for the fluoro pink costumes with no sleeves and wristbands being mandatory, also I'm tipping 3/4 length pants

Sounds like they will come up with something that will appeal the Gen Y - the only problem is that it won't appeal to Gen Y and it will turn everyone else off

Don't worry, due to the aforementioned Gen Y small attention spans, the whole thing will be over in a flash when the kids want something else.

It is instructive to note that despite the Big Bash only having been in existence for five years, the powers that be deem it necessary to jazz it up already. Product getting stale already, James?

Do the people in these agencies actually have kids or know people in Gen Y? FFS.

Yeah that'd be odds on. Does anyone at CA know how to create a credible sporting comp? And that it can't be done with a name like 'Maxx'?

There's two types of teams they're looking at:
Team A

This team will welcome the whole community of Victorian cricket fans, but it will, in particular, represent those areas that have historically been less affluent and are now undergoing an economic and cultural renewal.

Historically, these communities do not come from well-established cricket traditions – footy and soccer are generally their sports of choice – but the time has come to forge their own cricket team playing on the national stage. The new team will reflect the dynamism and energy of the people living in those areas of Melbourne and Victoria.

Fresh, multicultural, gutsy and hungry for success, nothing will stop it. The new team will be cricket’s new kid on the block. It will be the future of cricket!
Team nicknames include:
- Slam
- Destroyers
- Rumble
- Blitz
- Crushers
- Rampage
- Renegades
- Lightning

Or
Team B

This team will welcome the whole community of Victorian cricket fans, but it will, in particular, represent the community of fans who have cricket in their blood having played and watched it since they were kids.

This team will be inspired by the talent and style found in the most prestigious cricketing traditions, reinterpreted through the fast pace and irreverence of the Twenty20 format.

Dashing and talented, this new team will be the shining light in the new Big Bash League!
Team nicknames include:
- Guns
- Hammer
- Mercury
- Maxx
- Dukes
- Major

The survey's here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/t20victoria

So from these names we could see the Melbourne Maxx, Geelong Guns or Southern Slam.... starting to sound very IPL

<sigh> I recognise that choosing a sporting team name is not easy, but those lists are appalling. And all that crap about who the team will represent?!? Could you possibly get any more patronising?

lol - satirists couldn't write it any better

9. If there was something that would have helped you make a decision, please describe it below.

This is total trash. Why not have 2 teams that represent and district and play cricket. People can be entertained by watching a cricket match. It is sad to see money being wasted on marketing wankers who basically contribute nothing. Perhaps spend money on getting people to play cricket and people might be interested to go an watch a few games

And while we're at it can we come up with a better name for the competition than Big Bash League? Sounds like the kids that play during the lunch break at a Test Match...

Stupid sounding names isn't what attracts Gen Y fans. I doubt Brisbane Roar, Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory attract more "Gen Y" fans than Adelaide United and Sydney FC because of their name. Unless they are going for the, hey check out all the stupid names in this cricket comp. I predict it to fail, but last longer than the ARC only because Cricket has deeper pockets.

There will be a novelty element that will probably see it be relatively successful in it's first year - it wouldn't surprise me to see average crowds be around 20,000 or so. After that, the teams are going to have to forge some sort of connection to supporters once the novelty wears off. If CA treat the league as a joke (by calling it the 'big bash league' or something just as f***ed) or the teams treat themselves as a joke (by calling themselves the 'Rumble', 'Hammer' or something equally retarded), then the fans will respond in the same way.
What it will have over the ARC and most definitely the A-League is that some of the world's best players will be playing. That alone will get people through the gates. But it won't guarantee any sort of attachment or loyalty from supporters, which presumably they're looking for.
