The new T20 Big Bash League will replace the existing KFC T20 Big Bash next summer and it'll be a city-based competition with 8 franchises. Victoria and New South Wales will have 2 franchises each. Looks like Cricket Victoria are planning on having two Melbourne-based teams. I'd much prefer to see a team representing regional Victoria, based at Geelong's Skilled Stadium, and maybe play a game or two in Ballarat. There's a survey going around at the moment you can fill out, they've listed the potential names for one of the teams, they are dead-set dreadful!

Might go the way of the IPL, we could have the Melbourne Australians and the Sydney Super Kings taking on the Kings XI Perth or the Brisbane Royal Challengers.

These two comments worry me a bit...

This is total trash. Why not have 2 teams that represent and district and play cricket. People can be entertained by watching a cricket match. It is sad to see money being wasted on marketing wankers who basically contribute nothing. Perhaps spend money on getting people to play cricket and people might be interested to go an watch a few games

And while we're at it can we come up with a better name for the competition than Big Bash League? Sounds like the kids that play during the lunch break at a Test Match...

Stupid sounding names isn't what attracts Gen Y fans. I doubt Brisbane Roar, Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory attract more "Gen Y" fans than Adelaide United and Sydney FC because of their name. Unless they are going for the, hey check out all the stupid names in this cricket comp. I predict it to fail, but last longer than the ARC only because Cricket has deeper pockets.

There will be a novelty element that will probably see it be relatively successful in it's first year - it wouldn't surprise me to see average crowds be around 20,000 or so. After that, the teams are going to have to forge some sort of connection to supporters once the novelty wears off. If CA treat the league as a joke (by calling it the 'big bash league' or something just as f***ed) or the teams treat themselves as a joke (by calling themselves the 'Rumble', 'Hammer' or something equally retarded), then the fans will respond in the same way.
What it will have over the ARC and most definitely the A-League is that some of the world's best players will be playing. That alone will get people through the gates. But it won't guarantee any sort of attachment or loyalty from supporters, which presumably they're looking for.
