Even though I said ST is probably best it's far from perfect .
But it does show the world game and a lot of other sports .
It's a compromise for the general sports fan .
ST doesn't give second tier sports results even though more people might be interested in those results than say some higher profile sports .But then I don't expect it to be any different .

If you think ST is terrible , give a thought to SBS's delivery of AFL results .
You'd think they'd have a heart attack if an ounze of enthusiasm crept in .
I must admit I've only really watched SBS out of all the FTA channels for the last 5 years or so. But I do remember Sports Tonight having some local content included - SANFL results in SA versions for instance.

Like most cut-price news-media these days, ST is put together in Sydney and dished out to the affiliate network in each state. As a younger person I always found it strange to get Rugby League Sports News stories in SA. Perhaps to disguise this these days the local stations might put in one or two segments before they air the programme? I wouldn't know. If I watch news on commercial TV I just feel dumber an hour later and usually angry that I've wasted my time.

In defence of Sports Tonight.

It's better than Offsiders in the sense that it provides a wider coverage of sport. Cycling, basketball, golf, tennis, surfing and even A League get greater minutes than other networks. That's a product of the time they have but unlike Offsiders, they don't just talk about two sports for three-quarters of the bulletin and give ten second mentions to the rest.

Is it ? Isn't SBS cut price as well ?
Adelaide_United_Red wrote: ST is put together in Sydney and dished out to the affiliate network in each state.
It's promoted as a national program .
The SBS does not cater for the West Coast or AR.
Adelaide_United_Red wrote: As a younger person I always found it strange to get Rugby League Sports News stories in SA.
Even stranger they had soccer stories ?
No pleasing you is there when they actually air non mainstream sport.

I agree and I feel the same way about the amount of soccer on SBS .

I think they need a world , Australian and state news like they do in the regionals having a national and local news .Certainly commercial networks have to get away from just reselling cheap American productions .Unfortunately the ABC isn't the great alternative it used to be and the SBS has some interesting stuff .For sports content there is little option .Even payTV doesn't ensure that your sport is going to represented .I am lucky that AFL is on FTA and the WAFL is on ABC .Other sports have taken the money rather than the FTA route and most sports don't get a look in full stop.
Eventually it wont matter because sport content ,especially minor sports will be available on demand on the internet .Already you can watch AR in the USA on the internet if you wish and a large part of the AFL rights deal was the internet rights .

Yes, they pretend to have local content in the programme by inserting local content.

ST might get the arse as Channel Ten look to cut costs. That would be a loss.

Not as more and more sports fans move towards Fox for their sports needs. haves and have nots. if you don't have fox then you're not going to get the information you desire on a TV. This is where I'm fully supportive of the AFL's big TV deal...it should help with Victorian Foxtel subscriber numbers, which could have a knock on effect for the A-League in footy's off season. I expect to see the 30% figure (of households with PayTV) bandied about rise towards 40% over the next 5 years on the back of AFL fans desiring more complete coverage of their sport than just FTATV can provide.

Back on topic:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Football Federation Australia and Optus have today unveiled a new digital partnership that will change the way football fans interact with the game and their favourite teams.

Optus will create, operate, manage, market and commercialise FFA’s websites, mobile websites and mobile phone applications under its appointment as FFA’s Official Digital Partner following a competitive tender.

Highlights of the Optus-FFA Official Digital Partnership

• Redesigned websites for all National Teams and National Competitions
• Website functionality for mobile phones
• Mobile applications
• Unique and exclusive behind-the-scenes content
• In-depth statistical analysis and interactive features for fans
• Launch of new platform to be synchronised with the launch of the Hyundai A-League Season 7, this October 2011.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And, with the NBN rollout passing a major milestone last week, this is the strongest indicator that Optus will be heavily involved with the next HAL broadcast rights.

NOTE: In early May 2011, Optus also signed a deal with major IP TV operator, FetchTV. Fetch TV has the rights to the official channels of five of the leading European Football clubs, Europa League, UCL, FA and Carling Cup games.

Adelaide_United_Red wrote:Things I would like to see this year specifically

1. An increase in overall promotion of the HAL by FFA and the clubs
2. I think with the severe cut back of the less popular midweek games and with a bit of luck regarding weather that number is very achievable.
3. A bringing together of the various tribes of football (old soccer, new football) to cut down on the infighting that seems to pervade our game.
1. Is that the most effective use of money ?
2. A no-cost solution there but what's the problem with the weather in summer ????.
3. A low-cost solution .
Adelaide_United_Red wrote: Here are the original 6 reasons I posited that began this thread in December 2010

1. The future of the Socceroos.
2.The Joeys (u/17s)[/
3. Buckley said he would now be able to devote more time and resources to fixing the domestic game's problems. "It means that the whole organisation doesn't have this other massive project going on in parallel. That will certainly sharpen the focus and sharpen the minds, and allow us to concentrate our energy and resources into growing the A-League,
4. The Matilda’s
5.The Fans. We are passionate,
6. Hosting the AFC Nations cup in 2015.
1,2 . Hanging your hat on the fortunes of the national team .
3. Just words really .
4. Are you really hanging you hat on this one .
You do realise the AFL is interested in starting a national Women's AFL ?
5. Passionate , but not passionate enough to go to the games ?
I thought the lack of fans was the problem not the solution .
6. Gunna . Gunna have to wait until 2015 .

Nines, you are the biggest WUM on here.

whats wrong with the weather in Summer? is your memory so useless you cant remember a little place like Brisbane getting flooded last January? Last I checked, January was summer. So many games last season were affected by downpours of biblical proportions
Promotion. If its good enough for little competitions you might have heard of called the AFL and the NRL to have a TVC they run regularly, whoever thought a young league like the HAL didn't need one anymore should be shot.
Low cost solution...again, its not like football is flush with funds, better to spend a little effort getting everybody who cares about the game rowing in the same direction rather than constantly bickering in the media and giving the impression the gfame is a basket case.

you're quick to snipe...do you have any constructive criticism at all

A lot of games affected during this winter as well .
I think it is payback for the extraordinary run of dry weather .

Again ,you've read me wrong .
That was actually a compliment .
Do you need me to spell it out to you with a little gold star or something ?
Adelaide_United_Red wrote:do you have any constructive criticism at all
I have agreed with your points about the domestic league .
I have moderate to low weightings on some of the others .

I can give constructive criticism on where soccer went wrong but you're probably not interested in a hinsight view .
I see you don't ask for any suggestions for advancement .

You want constructive suggestions on how to improve Australian soccer ?

1. Concentrate on soccer and forget what the AFL are doing .
