Carney’s manager David Riolo leapt to the defence of his client on Monday morning, telling Fairfax Radio Network the photo was never intended to be made public.

“It’s a setup, like when people stand in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa,” Riolo said.

“Todd’s paid a very, very heavy price for a photo that he didn’t want out there or upload himself. It was supposed to be kept between mates.

“The person who took the photo contacted me this morning by text and said `my phone got lost’, supposedly, and that’s how the photo got out. It was meant to be a joke.

“He’s now got a photo of himself gone worldwide in not a very pleasant setting that’s going to be on the net for his family and everyone to see for future generations.

“That in itself is a very big price to pay.”

CRONULLA players have been encouraged to attend today’s information session with the NRL over the use of supplements at the club in 2011 and are expected to learn whether they will receive show cause notices.

The NRL will be hoping to bring the protracted 18-month saga to a head today when it updates players and/or their legal representatives on the ASADA investigation and any options they have regarding suspensions.

“The players really are in the dark and it’s a bit of a shambles the way the NRL has tried to rush this all through,” said a source close to the negotiations.

“Although they might only miss a month of football, the players are still concerned about their reputations.”

A SELECTED number of past and present Sharks players have today been offered one-year suspensions - back-dated to November 1, 2013 - if they admit to taking banned substances.

After revealing 17 players had received ASADA show cause notices this morning, The Daily Telegraph has now learned several players have been offered a deal that would see them free to return to regular duty this November - effectively a ban of just over two months.

It’s not certain whether all 17 players have been offered this deal.
