You know, Olympic Stadiums do have a history of being horribly ugly.

Including the 1956 MCG.

Montreal was WAY ahead of its time and probably ahead of itself ,especially the dud retractable roof!! LOL

But..the design, corporate boxes, roof etc is something we see in todays venues....Pity and sad to see it like it is today ;(

The montreal stadium is a real gem, one of my favourites in the world. Such as shame the state it is currently in and that its major tenant is now moving out.

Was the stadium in atlanta converted to baseball? looks like the top right hand corner in that photo could be where home plate goes?

Smackintosh you are quite correct. The main stadium of the Atlanta Olympics was re-developed into what is now Turner Field, home of the Atlanta Braves in Major League Baseball while the Atlanta Fulton County Stadium formerly used by the Braves, Atlanta Falcons (before Georgia Dome) and the 96 Olympic Baseball tournament is now long gone having been demolished after the olympics.

I remember those grounds at Atlanta side by side.

Turner Field looks good now. I remember for the track the seats were crooked (as they were partly in baseball shape and it looked bad).

What a Games that was. That 100m final was sensational. All the hype. Christie's false start. Bailey backing up with a medal.

You can really tell that although it was built as the main stadium of the 96 olympics that the venue was more designed for it's after olympics use by the Atlanta Braves than anything else.

A lot of people in America actually don't like what they have done with the stadium. Personally, I think they have done a terrific job with it and have given Atlanta and the Braves a purpose built baseball stadium to replace the "cookie cutter" Atlanta Fulton County Stadium.

Out of all the cookie cutter stadiums that popped up in the 60's and 70's across the USA to accomodate both baseball and gridiron, only RFK Stadium in Washington DC, Shea Stadium in New York City & Busch Stadium in St. Louis still exist. Bush is on borrowed time with the Cardinals set to move into a new Busch Stadium next door. Shea still lives on though under increasing speculation of another retractable roofed stadium being built in it's carpark to replace it and RFK continues to host the DC United MLS team and for the next 3 years will have regular season baseball for the 1st time since 1971 with the Washington Nationals playing there until their new stadium opens in about 2008.

How could anyone not like what they did to Turner Field. The round stadia (cookie cutter) are hopeless.

You can see in the Atlanta Olympic photos the bad angle of seats at first base (bad angle for athletics).

Jeffles you are so right. I would have hated sitting behind what is now home plate at Turner Field when the stadium was in use during the olympics. You can see from this pic how far away from even what was the finish line for track events that corner of the stadiums seating was.
