Its the GAA´s right to do what they want with their venue but if they really want to ban english sport or whatever else because of the past, they are an embarrasment to their own nation.

How come, say, manchester united can play german sides at old trafford considering it was flattened by the nazi city terror bombings.

Of course that was just the slight skirmish that was WW2 and not the uniquely special irish suffering.

english sport isn't banned..........it's all non GAA sports

Rule 42 (which forbids the use of GAA premises for anything other than GAA sports)

WHICH HAS SINCE BEEN RELAXED.

I'm prepared to understand the differences between the two events without the sarcasm.

Yes. too unique to overcome. Britain and Germany unleashed unimaginable suffering on eachother but have been able to get past it and are now part of the same defence alliance, nato.
This has long been unacceptable for Ireland( but then again why have a defence budget when you can freeload. )

Perhaps some irish, and others, should also watch fewer poor american movies and realise that they were not this small free heroic people but until very recently europe´s most taleban-like deeply oppressive religious state that happily locked up girls for decades for the unspeakable crime of having had sex.

I actually like the irish a lot, but not the politics of some of them. They really should move along and leave this self-absorbed small-nation self-righteous victim-mentality behind.

Word mate.

As much as the Irish hate the British, they've been willing to leech of them since independence.

Much like Canadians with the US and New Zealanders with Australia.

A fair few paddies have served in the British Army, Cheesie (my grandfather for one). Its a far more nuanced relationship than you seem to realise.

I'm sure it is...

Nuance is always fun.

To be honest I was thinking more of since the end of the second world war, rather than during WWII where significant (although I'd still argue inadequate) support was given.

So who is it that going to invade Ireland now? Apart from the British themselves who until a few months ago had more soldiers in the country then they did in Iraq.

Because of its history Eire has decided to take a neutral stance in international affairs, a position supported by the vast majority it's people who'd rather see tax payer money go to hospitals and schools rather then weapons of war.

And it can afford to do so because Britain and NATO continue to provide them with defence.

Do you think the Soviets would've got to Ireland and said "No, hang on, they're neutral. We'll just skip over them"

The Russians are coming!!!

Give me a break.

Ireland has no overseas colonies to maintain and hence it doesn't need to waist resources on a large military.

This is something to be proud off.

A noble sentiment indeed, but one that can only be afforded when you have a big brother to look after you.

ireland does have an army you know, about 11,000 full time "defence force" and another 12,000 part time.. not bad for a country of 3 millionish

www.military.ie

and they've served all over from bosina to liberia..under the UN flag

also about them not being in nato, i think it's because the irish what to be seen as a defence & peacekeeping force hence why they've been in the un for 50 year......

You're making them sounds more and more like New Zealand!

Not even I am that distrustful of paddies!

its all up to the GAA tbh, but as for british gaelic football teams playing in the republic then NO.

not forgetting the GAA is a very patriotic organisation, but hey lansdowne is a tin shed anyways a hole of a place.
