The rhyming slang version is the correct one.

I'm guessing they don't have the temp seats in that shot because its an NPC game - not much interest. Or there was a cricket match scheduled before or after the rugby game.

That was the Coliseum i posted.

The above link has a great range of stadium and sport photos based mainly in NZ.

Carisbrook upgrade key to southern World Cup bid

09.05.06 4.00pm

The success of an Otago and Southland bid to host a 2011 rugby World Cup pool still hinges on a multimillion-dollar upgrade of Carisbrook.

And the man spearheading Carisbrook's redevelopment plans has revealed a new stadium on another site is still not out of the equation, the Otago Daily Times reported today.

It was announced this week the 10 local authorities in Otago and Southland have been asked by the 45 South World Cup bid working party to spend $150,000 of ratepayers' money on preparing a joint bid to host one of the four cup pools.

If successful, it could mean 10 cup pool matches and a quarterfinal staged in Otago and Southland.

Malcolm Farry, the proposed chairman of the soon-to-be established Carisbrook Stadium Trust, and the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) said a key component to hosting a pool was likely to be the availability of an international class stadium.

Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch are assured of pools, but the South is in competition with areas such as Hamilton and New Plymouth for the fourth.

With a rundown Carisbrook already out of favour with the NZRU and no other stadium in the region of a suitable size, there is pressure to bring Carisbrook up to standard.

Farry said three options were still being considered. Two of those involved significant upgrades of the existing stadium, with the third option a new stadium at another site in the city.

"We're focusing on Carisbrook being an internationally acceptable stadium, right at the top for a much longer period than the six weeks the cup is talking about," he said.

Farry wouldn't say the cost of the proposals. A decision on Carisbrook's future would be made next month.

Carisbrook is a serious issue. My understanding is that it is the only ground owned by the local RU authorities. Of late, they have denied NZ Cricket the opportunity to play international games there while running cap in hand to the public purse asking for a handout for its "community" facility.

Dunedin is a city whose influence is on the decline. They are kidding themselves if they think they can keep touch with Auckland, Wellington and CHCH. This doesn't mean that they should not get an upgrade but they have to be realisitic. The Highlanders aren't selling out and the All Blacks will play there less and less as other cities start making their claims.

Of course there is no discounting the power of Rugby Union in NZ. If anyone can demand a grant when it probably shouldn't, it is them.

Sweeteners in offing for Eden Park locals

Sunday June 25, 2006
By Dylan Cleaver

Mt Eden residents affected by the proposed Eden Park redevelopment could be offered sweeteners such as free central heating installation and double-glazing in return for their consent.

The feature of the preferred design, which will be made public for the first time on Friday, is a superstructure that will replace the Eastern Terraces and South Stand.

This will provide the bulk of the extra 13,000 seats needed to bring the stadium capacity up from 47,000 to the 60,000 stipulated in the 2011 Rugby World Cup bid.

The new stand will be significantly taller than either of the two existing structures and cast a greater shadow on to some neighbouring houses.

However, the Herald on Sunday understands sweeteners will be offered to stop the $200 million-plus facelift failing at the consent stage.

Public consultation with groups, including Eden Park Neighbours' Association and Eden Park Residents' Association, will begin following Friday's announcement by the Eden Park Trust Board.

Feedback and submissions will be taken before resource consent lodgement in August.

Residents' concerns have centred on how the facelift will affect their lives, particularly during major sports events such as the World Cup. While the shadow cast will be longer, the new design will cut light and noise emissions.

Eden Park Trust Board chief executive John Alexander wanted residents to attend the three public meetings, the first at Eden Park's Hall of Legends on Saturday.

"Specific attention will be given to visual effects, improving public transport use, traffic management, containment of noise and light, and pedestrian movement to and from games," he said.

Architects HOK Sports have been brought on board as consultants. The firm has been involved with stadium designs including the redevelopment of the Melbourne Cricket Ground for the Commonwealth Games, and Brisbane's acclaimed Suncorp Stadium.

Features of the proposed redevelopment will include:

* The ASB Stand being extended to replace the Panasonic Stand

* A superstructure that will meet the extended ASB Stand and replace the existing Eastern Terraces and South Stand

* More than a third of the seating will remain uncovered

* Underground car parks

* An 8m wide pedestrian bridge from Kingsland

* A concourse circling the ground

* A transport hub at the back of the West Stand which will drastically reduce the size of Eden Park No 2 ground.

There are still issues over finance and governance, with costs expected to be significantly more than the $130 million figure touted by NZRU chief executive Chris Moller during World Cup bidding.

The Herald this week revealed secret discussions were taking place within the Auckland City Council to find $60m of ratepayer funding.

Industry sources also believe significant funding could be secured by issuing naming rights for the stadium, as long as Eden Park was incorporated in the title, for example, Emirates Eden Park.

Please let it happen! I might go back to Eden Park.

Surely they should be able to get more seats undercover. That's my only complaint, for now.

From what it sounds like the redesign is, indeed, going to be the design released a few months back (and which you can see a plan of earlier on in this thread).

From an aesthetic standpoint I think extending the new South and East stands also to the West, similar to Celtic Park (I think someone has mentioned this already too), would be a better design (although more expensive).

I feel if you are going to do something like this, you might as well do it right, and a more complete stadium would also provide greater cover for spectators, which surely has to be part of the planning.

The new West stand at Jade Stadium provides little cover for spectators and it's a nightware to be in when it's cold and raining.

Brazil should be hosting the World Cup. They have the infastructure, the population, the sporting culture and (at the right time) good weather. Shame Brazil lacks popularity and success.

Well, this is awkward.
