Does anybody know the exact capacity of Azadi Stadium in Teheran? On some websites (worldstadiums.com, stadionwelt.de, fussballtempel.net) there it has 100,000. But I googled and there I often saw 120.000 and even 128.000. So what's right? It's a big difference if the capacity is 100.000, 120.000 or 128.000. Thanks for help.

When the Aussies played Iran in the 1998 World Cup qualifiers it was definitely over 100K.

Jeffles the crowd figure from that game was 120,000 people...I would suggest that would be the most accurate figure Dundee as the stadium's capacity.

Here is what I found from Stadionwelt.de. It looks like there IS some form of terracing in the top tier.

am told admission to matches is about AUD 1! No wonder they pack the place out!

And considering the terracing, no wonder they can't count the crowds either.

Definatley NOT 120,000

Looks about 70-75k to me.

Being an Islamic state I remmeber the Aussie press making a big deal about how the crowd would be all men.

I can't tell the capacity. The photos are too small to count heads. But it does look like terracing on the top tier.

Terracing top tier and the capacity is something around 100,000 but it regularly fills up to over 120,000...

The stadium was built by the Shah in the 1970s for the Asian Games and was one of the best & largest stadiums of its time... it is decaying now though and can be dangerously overcrowded at times.

Unfortunately, since the Islamic revolution women have been banned, although in recent years, they have forced their way into the ground... notably when Persepolis played Bayern Munich.

With terracing like that, and being far back it looks as though they could definitely fit 100,000. And just remember they probably cram more people in per square metre then is allowed in Australia.

True - remember the MCG had an official crowd of nearly 122,000 for the 1970 GF - when the stands were much smaller than the present ones. #80,000 were seated on bench seats, the rest stood - very closely together. Also no low capacity corporate boxes using up the viewing areas.

In this case, there looks to be only 30 - 40,000 seats at most. But if the upper tier is all or mostly terraces, with few corporate boxes etc taking up viewing areas and also absent any effective health and safety regulations - then 120,000 is possible crammed in. Such a stadium doesn't have to be that big under those sort of conditions, to get a huge crowd.

Well i dont the pictures you have seen dont do Azadi much justice, its a massive stadium....

No, the pictures don't lie - its not that massive. Modern all seating stadiums with very large corporate capacity, such as the redeveloped MCG and the new Wembley, dwarf Azadi in their actual viewing area. Cramming spectators onto terraces doesn't require all that 'massive' a stadium compared to these new (albeit lower capacity due to superior facilities) stadiums.
