well it's been a while coming now but the concrete terraces surrounding waverley park finally meet the wreckers ball today, after a three year wait. pictures of it were on the nine news, hopefully you can post some pics of it's progress or something.

I agree...What a waste...

The Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne deserve better than this..

Time to cry.

is a bit sad to see it go, but I hate that place. I hate it so much.

But I'm sure that it would not be demolished if it was built to be 150,000

What a marvellous sight that would've been

A few coats of paint and new bucket seats and the entire stadium would have looked new again. But if Waverly can't pull a crowd, it can't pull a crowd. Watching all these Melbourne teams getting squeezed into 2 venues though is a shame, why in hell are teams forced to play low pulling games at huge stadiums? Half the time the interstaters come into Melbourne the general public couldn't give a flying @#$%, is this not the perfect time to bring footy back to the fans in suburban Melbourne and play the games at the suburban grounds?

trying telling the afl that, they seem to think it isn't in the games best interest to give something back to the loyal fans

While it is a shame for fans that Waverley is no longer, the economic reality is that inner city stadia are the best option at the moment. Maybe the AFL should consider some double header's at the MCG in particular so that costs can be shared more evenly and a greater atmosphere can be created. Having the ground only half full on Saturday afternoon and then half full again on Saturday night defies logic doesn't it? This would help to also bring to the ground those not affiliated with any particular club.

True point argee. You have to blame various Vic Govts for not fulfilling their promises to link Waverley to the whole city. But it is sad. Anyone who doesn't vote "Yes" on the this website's poll is cold IMO.

Double headers should be looked at. Also they should not open up the whole stadium for big events. Keep people closer together and you'll create more atmosphere.

I am very sad to see Waverley go. I used to attend most Hawthorn games at the venue. It is in the geographic centre of Melbourne and is the region with the most growth. Big mistake demolishing it. There used to be potential plans on the old Austadiums site. They could of converted it into a stadium similar to WestpacTrust Stadium in NZ with new bucket seats, new roof around the outer with corporate boxes in it, and a COLOUR video screen instead of that orange/black thing!! It would of been an unreal stadium - 3rd biggest in the country. Well it's too late now. I was at the ground for the very last (proper) game - absolutely full - about 73,000 fans - memories I will never forget.

On the topic of closing sections of the ground, I saw an old old newspaper article when the plans for the Great Southern Stand were released, and they said that the top tier would only be opened for big events such as the Grand Final.

I drove past Waverley today and the whole outer is now gone. Just the main stand and light towers remain. Very sad to see. :(

If they'd only brought the train line closer, Waverley would be one of the premier stadia in Australia today and Telstra Dome may never have been thought of.
That is the reality of suburban stadia. Provide public transport and the people will come. It worked for a long time at ANZ in Brisbane with the then innovative free 'park n ride' from shopping centre and train station carparks all over the city (even the northside).

I for one have no problem that they demolished waverly, its just the replacement should have been at least 20,000 bigger, as it gets equal amounts of games as MCG if not more, yet when a blockbuster comes along it can only fit 9,000 more then subiaco which for two clubs such as essendon and Hawthorn would easily be able to get 70,000.

Essendon play all their blockbuster games at the MCG. Not very many, if any, 'high-attendance' games are played at Telstra Dome.

Had you ever been to Waverley Egan? Someone like me who supports Hawthorn and went to the ground for just about every home game saw the benefits in the ground. The stadium had about 50,000 walk-up seats, none of this reserve seating crap like Telstra Dome. It had a massive amount of parking, best surface in the league, very good lights. Although it was becoming out-dated, all it neaded was a bit of work such as new seats and a new video screen. And with a 72,000 seating capacity, it could of been a quality venue once again.

That is one of the reasons i don't like waverly even though i cant' remember the game the eagles happened to play on your home ground for the 91 grand final. No i havent been to Waverly but I hated the multicoloured seats, the lack of covering although the white elephant is even worse. Waverly was never a stadium that meant alot to me as it is situated in Victoria and simply never thought of it as a worthwile or good stadium, but Colonial in terms of capcity is not much better. I remember i few years ago they wanted to switch to the MCG so they could get a larger crowd when both hawthorn and essendon were unbeaten. The only thing Waverly had going for it is its capcity, AAMI stadium seems like the minature version of it except the fact it has no multicoulored seating it also has a lack of covering. Although for the people of melbourne it must be the best thing since slice bread. :D
