Light Up Jubilee!

A Development Application (DA) has been lodged with Kogarah Council for the installation of permanent lighting at Kogarah's Oki Jubilee Stadium. The lighting upgrade is fully funded as $8 million was allocated to Oki Jubilee Stadium following the re-election of the Coalition Government.

The installation of permanent lighting will prove beneficial for the sporting and community events that are currently staged at the site and will ensure that Oki Jubilee Stadium remains competitive with other sporting venues going forward.

Oki Jubilee Stadium will become a true multi-purpose facility and the St.George District's premier sporting location. Consequently the profile of the Kogarah Municipality will be significantly increased, which will have a positive impact on local businesses and ratepayers. The improvements to the venue will entrench the Dragons and Sydney Olympic in Kogarah and will provide the Municipality's youth with a focal point for their sporting aspirations.

I've emailed the R2K folks about some plans/pictures etc, but all they've got are the highly techinal plans sent out to residents for the DA which aren't appropriate for the website. They are apparently trying to get something for the site soon.

DA approved for Jubilee training field

Kogarah Council have passed a Development Application (DA) that will allow the area outside Jubilee Oval facing the Princes Highway to be used as a training area. As a result, the surface of the area will now be upgraded. The Dragons had previously been granted with a temporary licence to use the area for a 12-month period.

The DA to install an additional turnstile at the northern end of the ground will go before the Councillors this Monday (24/01/2005), while the DA for additional seating still needs to be finalised.

As previously reported by R2K, a DA has been lodged with Kogarah Council for the installation of permanent lighting at Kogarah. R2K launched a petition to garner community support for this proposal.

There is also a scan of an advertisement in the SMH for new lighting:

Renovations coming along nicely it seems.

Given that cricket and Aussie Rules aren't played at Jubilee Oval, why don't they do a "Perth Oval"?

Maybe because doing a Perth Oval is only done because of heritage issues...I wonder if Oki has those same issues ?

You may have found without heritage listing, the original stand would have been destroyed and the grandstand would have been constructed on the other side....eg the effects of the setting sun, is really annoying sitting on that side of the ground.

I just meant turning an oval into a rectangular pitch. I could just have easily said, do a "Cumberland Oval" or a "Lakeside Oval".

I think it is twofold:

1. That is the way it is
2. Nobody really wants to spend enough money to change it.

It is a tiny oval so it doesn't really affect viewing all that much in any case.

If Saints played there full time there would be money for it. WIN was lucky in that it was in a regional centre.

Money is an issue as are the local residents that object to everything.

What is the ground like in winter. Viewing from the top tier of the stand is an experience if the wind comes in. With the ground perched high on a hill looking towards Botany Bay I was nearly blown away when watching Sydney Olympic and Wollongong Wolves recently. And this was in the middle of summer!

You're right. Even though it is not close to the Bay there are no hills etc to shelter the ground from a sea breeze.

Seven Residents Fail To See The Light

With the neighbour notification period drawing to a close for the lighting Development Application (DA) at Oki Jubilee Stadium, a petition has been received by Kogarah Council against the installation of the light towers and poles.

On 13 January, Kogarah Council received a petition that was signed by seven residents who are opposed to the Councillors providing consent to the DA.

R2K is pressing on with the petition in favour of the lights and has managed to garner solid support in the streets encircling the ground. Most residents in streets such as Colvin Avenue, Wheeler Street, O'Meara Street, Anglo Square, High Street, Garden Street and Park Street have been very happy to sign the petition and see the improvements to the ground as beneficial to the Kogarah Municipality. It's interesting to note how many Dragons' supporters live close to the ground, with many expressing the view that they would like to see more matches at Kogarah than are currently staged there.

In addition to the local residents, the businesses in Kogarah and Carlton have been enthusiastic about the petition and look forward to Oki Jubilee Stadium being maintained as a community asset where they can attend rugby league, soccer and other local events.

R2K is seeking volunteers this Saturday (January 29) to assist with the lighting petition in Carlton and Beverley Park. If you're able to assist, please contact Lachlan McLean on 04040 16027 or send an e-mail to lightupjubilee@r2k.info

In other news, Kogarah Council will vote on the DA tomorrow night (January 24) for the installation of the turnstiles in English Street at the northern end of the ground. While two residents from High Street and Prince Edward Street have registered their opposition to the turnstiles that will assist with disabled access, there has been no opposition from the residents in English Street. Significantly, Kogarah Council notified 1,500 residents of the proposed turnstiles and two objections from 1,500 is an unsubstantial number. The DA for the turnstiles is expected to be approved and an R2K representative will also speak in favour of the proposal.

Seven seems pretty good. Heaven knows it could be worse.
Northern turnstiles approved by Kogarah Council

The Development Application to construct an entrance booth and turnstiles at the English Street end of Oki Jubilee Stadium was unanimously approved by Kogarah Council at the meeting tonight (24 January).

The new turnstiles will increase the level of access for disabled patrons and will link in with the terrace seating proposed for the northern side of the ground.

The renovations keep on moving on.... but a turnstile is much easier to pass council then stadium lights in a suburban residentail area.

i have been in carlton on game day, not going to a game, shouldnt you be pressing for a carpark that can accomadate all these fans? the ground already has lights dosnt it? surely a way to accomodate the increased capacity should be more important than new lights.

also hope the new lights get passed if thats what you want, only because i hate the NIMBY attitude of people who move into an area well knowing that there is a sports facility near by then complain every chance they get cause they cant go to bed a 6pm on the dot on saturday night cause people are out having a good time F*CK them all of and build a 50,000 seat stadium on kogarah if ya want, thats my opinion

The lights at Kogarah are only training lights. Not good enough for matches. They hire lights when they have night games (night games are rare as buggery these days due to residents).

As for car parking, I don't find it too bad. Sure it is suburban and a bit cramped but I've never had problems at Kogarah. Public transport is good as well.

Since the return to Kogarah, night games scheduled for Channel Nine have been moved to WIN Stadium

The pro-lights R2K petition got over 1300 signatures, including 340 from the Council Ward that includes the stadium.

Carparking is fine for a surburban ground. There isn't anywhere to build a carpark anyway. Public transport is wonderful, just an easy 500 metre walk from Carlton Station.

I'm sure nobody cares by now but:
Light Night - 14th February

Kogarah Council will make their decision on the Development Application for upgraded floodlighting at Oki Jubilee Stadium on Monday night (February 14).

The meeting will commence at 7pm at Kogarah Council's chambers in Belgrave Street, Kogarah. In addition to the lights, Council will also decide on the Development Application for additional seating at the northern and southern ends of the ground.

Yay!!!!

We got them!
Light Fantastic: Council approves Jubilee floodlights

The Development Application to install upgraded floodlighting at Oki Jubilee Stadium was unanimously approved by Kogarah Council tonight, providing Saints fans with a luminous St.Valentine's Day present.

The decision to approve the lighting is a defining moment in the history of Kogarah and will give the ground the facilities it so richly deserves. Kogarah Council's consent secures the long-term future of Oki Jubilee Stadium as a leading sporting venue and guarantees the future of elite rugby league in the St.George District after it was severely threatened during the Super League War and its aftermath.

The new lighting is appropriate for the venue because it reduces light spill and glare, effectively balancing the needs of the community with the needs of Oki Jubilee Stadium by redirecting wasted light spill onto the playing surface and away from neighbouring properties.

R2K commends Kogarah Council's Director of Development Steve Clements and General Manager Gary Sawyer for the professionalism involved throughout the Development Application process. Special mention should also be made of Mayor Michael Platt, Deputy Mayor Nickolas Varvaris, Councillor Adam Mazzaferro and St.George DRLFC's Robert Stone for their work on the Jubilee Oval steering committee.

R2K would like to thank the 1,300+ supporters who signed the lighting petition, as it was irrefutable evidence that the proposal had broad community support.

While not officially confirmed, it is understood that the lighting will be installed by 6 May, thus ensuring that the venue could host a night match in round 10 against Penrith if the NRL schedules the match for a Friday or Saturday night.

In addition to the lighting, Kogarah Council also unanimously approved the Development Application for the installation of permanent tiered seating to the northern and southern ends of Oki Jubilee Stadium and the replacement of the existing bench seating.
