ST KILDA'S bid to return to a redeveloped Moorabbin has taken another step forward with the Victorian Government committing $150,000 towards planning for the project.

The funding for scoping works to be carried out on Moorabbin was confirmed part of the state budget, released on Tuesday.

The Saints have already received a financial pledge of $5 million from the Kingston City Council, along with the $8 million from the Victorian Government in May last year and $5 million from the AFL.

Last week's pledge from the local council moved the club closer to realising its ambition to restore its presence at Moorabbin precinct, where the Saints played VFL/AFL games from 1965-1992.

While the state budget funding was committed as expected, there are still hurdles to clear. The club needs to raise a further $5 million to make the project happen.

Also 30 million for Ballarat to host Western Bulldogs AFL matches.

And $70 million for next stage of Kardinia Park.

ST KILDA and the AFL have been told the door is shut on the league’s plan for a Saints training base at the historic Junction Oval.

The Herald Sun can reveal the club has had an initial discussion with the City of Kingston about the prospect of the Saints returning to their other former home base, Moorabbin

The Saints left for Seaford in 2010 after a bitter dispute with the council. However St Kilda’s social club and poker machines remain at Moorabbin.

Plans are already in place for an $11 million upgrade of Moorabbin as a community facility and home of football in Melbourne’s south-east.

The AFL and St Kilda have continued to lobby the State Government and St Kilda and Albert Park community and sporting groups in a bid win approval for a joint development with cricket at the Junction Oval.

But the Herald Sun understands the AFL and St Kilda have been informed the Andrews Government will not consider the joint development option.
