Just thought I'd draw attention to the fact $30 million is being spent in the near future to upgrade the Great Southern Stand at the MCG. This has been spoken of before. Was a small article in the Herald Sun today saying that AFL Victoria's current lease hasn't been extended as due to the upgrade, there will be less office space available at the ground. They'll be moving out later this year. In terms of what the actual upgrade will involve I'm not sure at this stage.

Now I reckon Andrew Bolt is a tool, but I couldn't see anywhere in his article that suggested the MCG should be #1.
Here's the list. The only other Australian Stadium to make it was ANZ at #24. I'd rate several stadiums around the world higher than the World Games Stadium!

1. World Games Stadium, Koashiung, Taiwan (pictured, below)
2. Meydan Racecourse, Dubai, UAE
3. Cowboys Stadium, Dallas, USA
4. Wembley Stadium, London, UK
5. Soccer City, Johannesburg, South Africa
6. Sapporo Dome, Sapporo, Japan
7. All England Club, Wimbledon, UK
8. Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi, UAE
9. Veltins Arena, Gelsenkirchen, Germany
10. The Bird’s Nest, Beijing, China
11. Dubai Sports City, Dubai, UAE
12. Flushing Meadows, New York, USA
13. Camp Nou, Barcelona, Spain
14. Madison Square Garden, New York, USA
15. Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne, Australia
16. Yankee Stadium, New York, USA
17. Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, USA
18. Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indianapolis, USA
19. Lord’s Cricket Ground, London, UK
20. Fenway Park, Boston, USA
21. Emirates Stadium, London, UK
22. Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, USA
23. Air Canada Centre, Toronto, Canada
24. ANZ Stadium, Sydney, Australia
25. Croke Park, Dublin, Ireland
26. Ryogoku Kokugikan, Tokyo, Japan
27. La Bombonera, Buenos Aires, Argentina
28. Bristol Motor Speedway, Bristol, USA
29. Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund, Germany
30. Las Ventas, Madrid, Spain

I like Las ventas in Madrid...

I don't think Wembley Stadium should be 4th.

I think what the original poster was driving at, and I'd agree, that it's a bit rich to describe being ranked 15th in the world at ANYTHING as a 'snub'.

Is Gael Monfils being snubbed by being ranked the world #15 at tennis? I think not.

I am quite sure that it is not possible to get that many rows of seats along the sides of the ground. The rake is way too flat. Using a C value of 80 I could only fit in about 25-30 rows if I recall correctly.

Can't happen. WONT happen. So stop pretending some magical rectangularization fairy will appear and make the MCG soccer friendly!

Suck it up, admit Sydney has the best venue for the final unless the Victorian government has the balls to build a 90,000 seat rectangular ground and sticking it up AFL by telling them it won't be bastardised for their sport!

Some body actually standing up to the bully-boy AFL?? I want a puff of what you're smoking...won't happen in our lifetime, despite the copious $$ AFL get from both state & federal govts, they wouyld cry blue-murder(ala miners tax-style) should any govt (state or feds even commit $10 to soccer football, where do you think these 'journalists' are getting their so-called 'stories' from regarding alegations of FFA largesse in bidding for 2022? I sure don't remember similar stories in the lead up to the bidding by Sydney for the 200 Olympics? [time to remove my tin-foil hat and get back to work surely?]I guess if I seem paranoid, its because I'm a product of the AFL bully boy treating my sport of choice [the actual World Game] as little more than a road hump in its delusional push for world domination. AFL has quite rihghtly IMHO disregarded both rugby codes as serious threats to it and has over the last 5 years(since Lowy took charge at the FFA) ramped up its attackson football. It's plain for all but the most delusional of AFL cheerleaders to see.

As explained previously, the rake would be one of many problems with this design. The MCG was never designed for the notion of retractable seating and the physical possibility of retractable seating at the MCG with the current stands is nil.
The northern stand shouldve some way be designed with retractable seating in mind.I think the whole issue of the Etihad turf issues and the lack of retract usage at Etihad may have played a decision. The end result was really just a taller carbon copy of the Great Southern stand.Whether that was the right way to go or not is debatable. Most Victorians would probably say its was the right way.
