New Subi stadium expected to be scrapped
2nd February 2009, 14:00 WST

Premier Colin Barnett is expected to announce a new Subiaco Stadium will be delayed for two years and the scrapping of redevelopment plans for the WA Museum and Perth Waterfront at a post-Cabinet press conference this afternoon.

Thewest.com.au understands Mr Barnett will announce plans to redevelop the museum on its current site, rather than the East Perth Power Station as planned by the former Carpenter government.

Plans to extend the northern suburbs rail line to Butler are expected to be re-instated following suggestions late last year the project had been scrapped.

Mr Barnett is expected to reiterate his previous preference for a foreshore development, which is for something low rise and “family friendly”.

This is just getting rediculous now. I really feel for you Perth people. imo there is no other City in Australia in as much need of a stadium upgrade then Perth. You continuously sell out WCE and Freo games, could easily fill 60 000 week in week out. Surely the AFL would be screaming out for a stadiu by now, let alone WAFC, and sprts followers.

How did Barnett win the last election? Carpenter appeared to be actually doing a decent job with some plans for the future even if things were on a slow timeline.

carpenter lost because the electorate are idiots, case in point was a television ad the liberals put up, which simply asked the question, 'Name three things the government has done since they were in power" of course i can name countless of things, but because the general electorate don't follow the political news very much they just couldn't name things, and the labor party believing the electorate are smarter than this never bothered to reply with an ad detailing what they have done.

The AFL have far higher priorities in other states. It's not like they're worried about the parlous financial state of West Coast or Fremantle.

Carpenter's problem was the arseclowns behind him. If they weren't corrupt, they were as thick as 2 short planks.

This mob seems to think it's sound economic policy to massively cut spending and infrastructure projects at a time of contraction. WTF? Morons.

Keeps his election promise. Seems he is going to keep the Ellenbrook Train line as well then.

Barnett won based on a few votes in Riverton and because Labor was planning to close Royal Perth Hospital that lost them a sh*t load of seats in labor heartland - inner eastern perth.

Had they have kept Royal Perth Hospital they would have won the election. The following 6-7 months is exactly why I didn't want Liberals to win the thing...

The major stadium seems to have been scrapped for a new childrens hospital and more public housing.

It seems Liz Constable is the defacto premier of WA. Impressed with a Liberal Government spending more money on public housing...has to be Constable's social justice arm coming through.

The West was also heralding the official delay of any works at Subiaco Oval for 2 years as a blow to the world cup bid as well.

Langoulant said in the west yesterday (couldn't find it online) that if nothing is done at Subiaco Oval then parts of the western grandstand will have to be condemned as there are safety concerns.

As I have said before, they are going to wait for someone to be seriously injured before they do anything about the sort of conditions that pile of dump is in...
