Subi Oval’s future use uncertain
19/Jul/2011

By Amy Hallett, Western Suburbs Weekly

Comments:

FUTURE use of Subiaco Oval is uncertain, with Premier Colin Barnett saying it is unlikely to be used for rugby or soccer once football moves to Burswood.

Mr Barnett said the State Government would start spending $88 million building permanent grandstands at Perth Oval – the first stage of a redevelopment.

He said the oval would seat between 25,000 and 30,000 people.

“So for Western Force games, for rugby league games that come here, for (Perth) Glory games, they’ll play all their games there,” Mr Barnett said.

“The only time a new stadium would be used, or intended for Subiaco, would be an international or Wallabies game.

“For normal club games, they would be at Perth, and that would be a purpose-built rectangular stadium.”

A WA Football Commission spokesman said when the proposed new stadium was constructed at Burswood, Subiaco Oval would remain the home of the WAFC and the West Coast Eagles.

The spokesman said the WAFC would explore options for the appropriate redevelopment of Subiaco Oval, which could include a State Football Centre of Excellence, the removal of some of the older stands to create a smaller boutique stadium and it could host events such as pre-season AFL NAB Cup games, State talent academy games and WAFL finals.

“As Paterson Stadium will remain the Home of Football until at least 2018, there is a lot of time to investigate options and nothing has been confirmed at this point,” the spokesman said.

Subiaco Mayor Heather Henderson said the City intended to work closely with the WAFC about the Oval’s future.

It would be hilarity if we kept a 30,000 seat venue just for WAFL finals. Three Tier Stand and Two Tier Stand may be the only stands demolished?

12 months 'real' time or 12 months 'Perth Stadium Time(PST)'?? if the latter, we could very well be waiting 5 years:(

What's 'stage 1'?

If you mean that new stand, i'd be surprised if they started it in the next 12 months. I haven't heard anything for ages in relation to it, and if they were going to start, the end of the Super rugby season would be the time given the Glory are in much lesser need of those seats. An 18-20 month construction time would only result in 1 SR season affected.

Its at the very last stage of bitching...

Town of Vincent and State Government are battling out on the issues of long term lease to the Government and how much the Government should pay for the long term lease. Town of Vincent have always looked at it as a money making machine for their rate payers. So the agreement is stuck in the terms of whats in the best interest of the local council, rather than whats in the best interest for the state.

What's in the best interest of the local council is to make sure they get as much money as they can get for the 100 year lease they give to the state government. Obviously the state government is not quite impressed on how much they are going to have to pay...

No idea when its going to start, optimistically expect a 2013 start date.

A pretty low number of support really.

Adelaide Oval redevelopment had a lot higher support. Thus the political football this venue is becoming.

Build the wrong stadium 6 years ago for $400 million, or the right stadium in 10 years for $2 billion. A real tough one, I better pay some public servants.

Funnily enough though, the longer this is delayed, the greater the return they extracted from that old 3 tier stand with those sweet, sweet wooden bench seats.

WA has put a further $100M into the future fund for construction of Perth Stadium

http://perthstadium.com.au/index.php?id=103

They have published a version for the public of the Request For Tender for Architectural Consultancy Services. Its interesting reading.

^ Yeah, thats been a usual ploy of WA Governments to put Budget surpluses that are greater than they expected to pay off infrastructure.
