When you add to this the fact that the market in the area is now being serviced by GWS the need for the Swans to play out there is greatly diminished. Add also the increase in capacity and improvement in quality at the SCG and the only reason to retain ANZ as an AFL shaped venue is the AFL's novel idea that one day their code will be more than a niche sport in Sydney.
I think you're misinterpreting the drop to be honest. The size of the drop is a function of the size of the jump before it. The "drop" is the Swans continuing to draw crowds in line with their long term average, the 70k just make it look bad when held side by side.
Why did they get 70k? Meh, Sydney just does that every now and then, every sport gets a crack. But having smashed the lights out once doesn't mean all the average things you do afterward suddenly aren't good enough. I think they are good enough - at the SCG.
A reasonable analogue here is the Melbourne Figtree. They're averaging approx 22k which is nothing on their break out season 2&3. a ~20% drop in fact. But we wouldn't deny they're a solid football club, nor infer that football is dead in Melbourne. It just gives us pause to consider how successful a season it was way back when.

Have a look at Sydney crowds for Collingwood games. Around 40k leading up to ANZ being opened for AFL in 2003. Crowd jumps to 70k, stays elevated around 50-60k for 5 years except for 1 year (when Collingwood came 2nd last) and then drops back to 40k-ish since then. Clearly the novelty that was ANZ has worn off and Sydney taking games there does little for them or for the code.
Eh. To my mind just a few semantics around the core issue that we both agree no Swans at Stadium Australia. Respectfully disagree on some finer points.
Now, back to what a useless piece of crap this stadium is.

Attendance of 32,000 tonight for Swans vs Collingwood was about what I expected. Atmosphere was not too bad considering the place was well under half full.
The swans wanna move out of ANZ but Eddie McGuire is preventing them from moving all their home games to the SCG because of "no public transport out there and ANZ is our 3rd home ground" that is absolute rubbish

why don't Collingwood play an actual home game there?
it is a collingwood home game under an AFL contract. Sydney want all their home games to be played at the SCG to free up ANZ for re-development. They have the support of Preimer O'Farrell to move out but Collingwood are like a political party and will stop at nothing to keep the swans playing at ANZ to ruin their record.
They should charge Collingwood double the hiring costs....Swans fans arent going to keep showing up there if they keep getting beaten by those Nuff nuffs.

The NRL is considering charging more against the swans (that's how the financial thingy in the AFL works, charging more vulnerable clubs while keeping Carlton, Collingwood and Hawthorn's finances high in the green) in response to AFL markings still visible in Sundays NRL game. Sadly as long as Collingwood's membership numbers keep growing it's a losing fight as they love it at ANZ because it's like Etihad Stadium complete with a sh**ty playing surface.
