The biggest competition in the South at present is the SFL (AFLST) Premier League. It is not a very good league.hot_dogma wrote:What are the current major clubs in Tas south of the 'divide'?
North Hobart
Hobart
Clarence
New Norfolk
Glenorchy
Sandy Bay
New Town
are the ones I can think of.
Biggest clubs in the South are North Hobart, New Norfolk, Glenorchy & Clarence.
The old Sandy Bay Seagulls folded in 1997, the old Hobart Tigers joined the SFL in 1998, and lost thier emblem and uniform.
In 2005 they changed to the Lions, and adopted the Brisbane jumper, colours. This led to an extremely bitter campaign which split (and continues to cause enormous hatred) at Hobart Football Club, and most of thier old supporters have walked away from the club.
That particular issue caused unprecedented levels of nastiness and hatred at the club, with the Lions and the Tigers Old Players, Officials & Supporters Association at loggerheads in a dreadful way, it is like a "Mexican Stand Off" at present.
New Town became the Glenorchy Football Club in 1957, when they moved to KGV Football Park in that year.
The TFL collapsed under crippling debt and lack of public interest in 2000.reece wrote: Is the TFL a good quality league or not.

Then why the change (and the inevitable resulting angst)? Another example of a poor trend emerging - local clubs adopting 'generic' AFL club jumpers instead of keeping their own unique ones.Tigers 1945 wrote:

On Tassie football - The Tasmanian Devils (so called) VFL team must have had a big impact on the local league - its taken away the best players from the local leagues and also attracted big crowds of up to 10k (though not so much this year due to lack of success).

Yeah i got it (who would not ?). If you hade to "dive" though the map of tassie would be Amazonish. I prefer the "racetrack" personally. Smut aside, football in northern tassie IMO has over the last 20 years been stronger hence the development of York park.spinDr wrote::lol:  i wonder if anybody else got the les paterson reference.hot_dogma wrote:Visiting the map of Tassie would do me fine for now.Jeffles wrote: Man I wanna visit Tassie!
It is increasingly looking like footy/north & cricket/south which is fine. I would travel either way for either sport. 2ish hours is not a big distance to travel to see top level sport IMO. Continuing with the North/South divide & although i have never lived in every state of Oz, there is a beer divide in Tasmania. In the south it's cascade & the North, Boags I wish i had a dollar for every time i heard "i don't drink that Southern/Northern sh*t. Bizarre.
